Yeh i got a vl. fitting a stereo in em, is a nightmare.

So you have the old one out? thats half the battle. To install the new one, you need to use the craddle that the unit locks in, slid that in, and push out the locking tabs. To get the unit to sit in flush like mine, u need to hack the verticle pieces of dash out, that obstruct the unit from sliding all the way in.

trashing the VL stereo was good stress releif.....! I just want the 5inch purely for mp3 playback...... just an enhancement to my char based LCD.... I dont want to watch movies in the car....

Hi guys,

I dont own a VL but I had worked on it number of times...
Many people will tell you that to change the deck you will need to take the whole dash out, but the trick is you dont really need to do that...
If you take the ash try out there are two screws behind it... they are really hard to get to, with the flexible screw driver take them out and the rest of the central consol will come out easly... all that will take you around 15mints to do.

i had mine going in the lounge with the tv as a display. i have a 4" lcd from a GPS system i got off ebay... it takes ntsc input. i got a vga to ntsc converter from sold.com and it works on the tv. just got to build a circuit for the brightness etc controls for the lcd and will see how it looks there. also had a 16x2 char lcd working for a while but not sure if i will use both. got an inerface kit from dick smiths cat no K-2805 it has 2 analog out 10 analog in and 8 digital outs. going to see if i can display car sensors on the lcd. i.e. water temp bat voltage. turbo boost.

how is yours?? is it working ,in the car?? where in bris are you??

The reason that the standard VL radio is hard to get out, is that is is screwd in with a bracket from the back of it, to the body of the car, just above the unit. The easiest / only way to get it out, is to break this plate. I was told my an audio installer to use a large flat screwdriver, and no mercy.

Spud42, mate i just checked out the K2805 kit from Dick Smith and it looks like might work for whatever we trying to achive.
However i would want to check first the refresh rate as well as the resoultion of this converter... But never the less good place to start.
I wonder if its possible to expand the input channels to say 16 or even greater seems like i need more input sources. Im getting that kit as soon as i get my car working again!

I'm between Sunnybank, Capalaba and Tingalpa. It just depends on what day of the week it is. I have had the setup in a car briefly as an mp3 only setup but have had it out so I can add DVD, GPS etc. I just bought a little book PC off ebay and a slot loading DVD drive off sold.com.au so a new system is on the way. I just need to get a TFT and I'm ready to go.
