wel it may be old, but better late than never, Im a mp3car person and I have had this system in my VL for two years now. ATM in another rebiuld, try to get a EPIA M working with a sproggy supply, 7" TFT PAL screen and cordless keyboard and trackball, and GPS if only I can figure out how. Heres a link to my own website with it in action, Oh and the old one had a 40x4 screen, and i had over 1000 mp3's in the car together with the 500 watt 8 speaker system it was neat.

You can see from those pix, I had it all in the boot nicely displayed in a false floor under some perpex windows and some crazy LED and NEON lighting. It was good, but its all ripped out now and im biulding a new system....well trying to, cant get the EPIA M mainboard to boot with the DC to DC supply on it, Cant figure out whats going on. I might just have to buy an OPUS ($400AU to get it in my hands)
Add me to the list, im from melbourne
It aint no family car.

I'm from Melbourne too. Haven't actually got a setup running as of yet as I still need to decide which motherboard to get. Thinking of something with TV Out onboard, with nforce graphics, onboard sound, etc. I'll probably run a duron CPU. Just need to find something that is small enough but without the cost of an EPIA! Needs to be able to run DVDs and divx movies.
Some of the features i'd like to have are; dvd, divx, mp3 playback, tv tuner, gps, webcam, automation of vehicle functions by using one of those jaycar relay boards, internet access via mobile phone dialed into home computer which is running telstra cable, 7" display most likely going to be composite to keep costs down, VGA is too expensivewill run a home built DC-DC power supply.
Few other things i'll be looking at once its all setup in the car are; voice recognition, ECU interface, custom interface to suit my system, wireless network. so much potential!
Also looking for some street level mapping software which can be used in australia.
Still quite some time to go but really i'm just waiting on the motherboard and then I can begin. Its one of the hardest choices unfortunatly.
Car Computers have so much potential though, pretty much anything you can think of it can do! When I get this going I think i'll be living in my car
Anyways thats it
cyas
heres my latest setup

I wouldnt have thought that a Duron would have been cheaper in the end. You'd need to get the chip, MB that had video and TV out (something that personally i've never seen), mem, hdd, etc
With the VIA all you need is the Ram, HDD and anything else that you want. The video and cpu is all taken care of and they do the job fine for DVD and divx providing you get the m10000. Theres a few places that sell it in melb, if you tell me where abouts you live i might be able to help you out.
As for getting it to do everything - thats what i'd like mine to do in the end. For the first timer just getting it working was an achevement for me. When I pull it out and re do everything over summer i'll be looking at getting some more exotic stuff for it, but until then i'm happy with how it is.
Your right, there is loads of potential, but unless you've got a couple of solid weeks to set aside its going to take ages!
Have to have a melb cruise sometime over summer
