Thread: Changing LEDs and Updating HDD

Regarding LEDs - the unit is so new that I doubt that anyone has taken it apart yet to change out the LEDs. Doing so will void your warranty.

Updating the HDD is more time consuming then difficult, but there are some ribbon cables that are somewhat sensitive to tearing. If you've completely taken apart a laptop before, the G4 should be similar.

The LEDs are square and have 4 contact points each and are 4 mm wide. I haven't tried replacing them. They are on a seperate circuit board also containing the buttons and IR sensor. Don't take this as an endorsment or a recognition of this as covered under the warranty in any way, but they look no more difficult to replace then the circuit board mounted LEDs in my car and would say it is possible to successfully do, but still can't confirm it. If you do attempt this, I would be very careful when soldering around the IR sensor as it is probably sensitive to heat.

Nice! Looks pretty simple I was afraid that the guts of the G4 would be a mess but the layout seems pretty clean. Much better then the innards of the MacBooks and Ibooks I'm used to seeing.

...which makes me wonder why would a simple LED have 4 contact points? Is there any chance of them being multi-color LEDs? If so, there must be some easy way of powering different contacts to get different colors?

They are not multicolor leds.

Looks far more easier than upgrading the T3 harddisk and memory. I'd say the T3 is a 8 out of 10 on the difficulty scale..
The T4 is a 6 for HDD and 7 for memory at that

that doesnt seem too hard even for a noob like me... but im still sota concerned. Will doing this void warrenty of the unit? Is it possible to get the unit "empty" or with any HDD or dvd drive of my choice?

I'd wait to see the store once we recieve the next batch.

You will not be able to select the CD drive for sure, however, we're looking into HDD and memory options.
