I do not have a red volume icon in the system tray.
I did find one in the control panel though. I also did use it to set the audio to 6 channel.
The sub out line is STILL dead.
Will updating the sound drivers harm anything?

As long as you use the correct drivers, reinstalling them shouldn't harm anything.

Besides changing the output to 6 channel and updating the drivers later tonight, what else can I do?
i had same problem.
had to enable 6 chan sound.
then i just muted the center channel
I finally figured it out last night. Turns out for some reason when you switch to 6 channel audio, it does not make the change until you reboot. So you have to switch to 6 channel, then reboot the G4. After that all was well.
You shouldn't have to reboot. It should work as soon as you change the setting... There was probably something else amiss.

I rebooted several times with it set to 4 channel, but never with it set to 6 channel.
Well all I care about now is that it's fixed.
