I came across the same thing. Just plugged it in

    However, Darque could be right.

Never question the wisdom of auto manufacturers - it's like alternator "S" (sense) wire that are thicker than the others (charge lamp, ignition +12V) yet the S circuit draws way under a charge lamp circuit (eg, 10uA - 10mA).

It is possible that the constant (yellow) draws high power - especially when the unit is turned on - but in that case the wire's fuse will blow if the circuit is overtaxed, hence no harm in trying....

I would assume that the yellow wire is the main power wire, and red is only used as an ignition sense, much like an amplifier perhaps?

I'm not quite sure if you meant this seriously or toungue-in-cheek [Washington's bailout of the auto industry]. It is the auto manufacturer that has the skinny yellow wire, and the carputer's wiring harness that has the thick yellow. Never doubt the computer manufacturer? Regardless it seems as if my safest bet is to run some thicker guage wire directly to the battery, as DarquePervert and the FAQ suggest. It would just be that much simplier to patch it to the Ford Wiring harness (as I had done with my Saturn), now I need to find a way through the firewall and under the hood.
