I don't know where you are getting your numbers from, but to offer it with a 120 gb hard drive standard would add at least $100 to the retail cost and its only that cheap if it was the only way it shipped and not an option.

Using a good-sounding lossless compression type (FLAC or otherwise), you can only get about 1300 songs in 30GB of space. I'm done with lossy MP3s.

As for cost, just a quick check of Newegg.com shows a 40GB 2.5" drive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144377) for $48, and a 120GB 2.5" drive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136008) for $78. (Both are 5400 rpm - for 4200 rpm it would be cheaper.) That is only a $30 difference, which I would gladly pay much more than to get it all integrated at purchase time.

I read on some post about upgrading the RAM that it is about half an hour just to get access to the insides. Doesn't sound like fun - and if it's that tedious, it seems like it may be easy to screw something up working with the small parts.

And, it will void your warranty - so you need to think really hard about whether you want to risk losing $2200 if it stops working 2 weeks later due to manufacturer defect.

I understand how commoditized hard drives are. Newegg can sell them at just barely breaking even because they are garunteed to sell out of thier stock, make money on the other stuff your buying, shipping, or some other thing that gets them a couple points on the things they sell millions of. We are not NewEgg we are not selling a barebones hard drive and the Infill is built from parts that will survive in the automotive environment.

With the G4, you are buying a high end head unit that gets you something very few other people in the world have. To get an upgraded hard drive, we have to either order a ton with an upgraded hard drive or pay someone to take it apart and put it back together. In either case, it no longer becomes something we can do anywhere close to $30. If your looking for the cheapest carputer you can install, its not the G4. The G4 gives you a very nice product that installs very simply and just works. This comes at a price though. We initially wanted to get them without ram or a hard drive and offer both those things as options, after considering the difficulty in adding them after they were assembed, it wasn't something we could do for a reasonable price.

The same problems you have and look at not being fun are the same ones we have. This is why it can't be a $30 option.

Question Power adapter to use G4 inside a home?

I have another question: Is there a power adapter available that will let me turn on the G4 inside my home, so I can play around with it (and make sure everything but the radio is working) before taking it to the installer?

(Maybe this should not be in the G4-specific thread, as it is probably generic to all head units... sorry if I'm posting in the wrong place.)

No - just like any car audio product, you will need a AC-DC power supply.

Something like this will not be supplied with the G4.

Yup, didn't expect it would come with the G4 - was just wondering if anyone knew of a link to purchase such a device from anywhere.

I wired up a molex connector to the power cables on my G4.
Then plug it into a Computer power supply.

    works well
