computer controlled car

I am working on a computer controled honda civic. i have everything except the software im looking at centrafuse. my idea with this car is computer controlled everything locks, windows, lights, trunk, hood, gas door, etc. if i could get the grant i would get centrafuse for the frount-end of the system and then build plugins for everything. also at a latertime would like to convert the transmission to manual and put in a supercharger and would like to try building some Advanced fetures into it like distraction awarenes and stuff like that but im going to rebuild the dash with a lcd screen as the insterment pannel.

That's a cool idea, and very possible, but I have two things to say. First, design the system so that is the computer crashes/gets fried/stops working the car can still be driven, and definitely leave a "back door" into the car so if worst comes to worst you can still get into the car to work on it. first off little background on me i have a duel degree in windows and linux with 13 networking classes and used to work at a place where we threw out a lot of equipment ,i have two of the exact systems already installed just no software i got them setup with os's running a homemade program that checks to see if the other system is active if not it takes control of the hardware from the usb server and unlocks everything. and got some more stuff coming and with 3 batteries if they somehow get to the point where it is going to die it will automatically start and run for 10 min and this really is a backdoor so to say but with what ive heard about hacking car computers i would like not to say. WINNING and btw lol i love my car

IMO a very applicable qualification.

Otherwise I can only reiterate BoyRacer's "auto systems must be bypassable" theme. And that's in case of hardware faults (even if you have software backdoors etc).

ofcourse i have both hardware and software backdoors and im also working with a close programming buddy about an android app for the wifi to connect to the usb device server and take control of all hardware controled connected included the media vault

You should create a project thread. I would really love to follow this since I drive a civic also. One day if I get the time and/or money, I would love to attempt more things like this. It is one of my end goals to add more control of the basic car systems.

Not really sure how this any different than using CF and USB relay board to control all these functions...

When I think of 'computer controlled car' I think a long the lines of the DARPA Challenge.
