Haven't smoked anything today (yet) but the only things stored in the fat are filename and location on the disk (and in the directory structure). NTFS adds security.
Even for filesize you need to check all files individually.
So when searching on any property that is not part of the filename, you don't use the filesystem's fat but the files themselves, and that takes time. A lot of time.
A search in frodo would take as much time (even more) as a db-sync. Brrrrrr.

I would like a way to be able to call these files what I want in the skin.xml
i.e. icon_avi.png instead of icone_avi.png for example.

ok. i will see how to make this easy.
I have perhaps a solution: what are you thinking if i code NMC to see:
1. if the file has the actual required name (example: icone_avi.XXX)
2. otherwise, check the skin's module options for a other filename (like icon_avi.XXX or ****_avi.XXX)
3. show a error if no good file found
It's eventually a good solution i think, so if user want to use original filenames, its OK. And if people want to use it's own filename, it has just to set the desired name in the skin.xml.
Godd or not ?

That would work. I wonder if there is even a point to check for icone_* if you can select it in the skin. I would just add the appropriate items to the "properties" of whatever module it would best belong too.
