    The setup Im thinking of...

Hello Everyone and thanks for reading my 1st super noob post. I have a datsun 510 that I have set up with an AEM standalone fully programable ECU. I spend a lot of time in the car with a laptop fine tuning my set up. I always thought it would be cool to have a screen in dash to be able to monitor real time stats through the AEM software. It would help a ton when changing the tune at the track or datalogging. After reading some of the tons of info on this site I have caught the bug and want to explore some of the other advantages of running a carpc. I am though mostly focused on the real time AEM dash so im not looking for anything super elaborate.

I already have a a pc and screen that I was planning on using.. I have dedicated laptop I only use in the datsun Already its a dell d600. And just yesterday I managed to pick up 3 xenarc 700ts monitors for 100 bucks

So this is what I have in mind so far...

Dell D600 mounted passenger side under dash on a tray that can be pulled out for keyboard use.
    Xenarc 700ts in dash
Carnetix p1900 to power the two.
Creative digital music USB into existing aux input on alpine cd player in the car.

Some things im undecided on .. (feel free to make sugestions)
    Front end ... Centrafuse ?
    USB GPS Reciever
external slim cd/ dvd player ... needed?

So thats All I have at the moment .. Any sugestions or input would be hugely appreciated.

    thanks

    -Danky

First off, daily driver or track star?

either way I say yes to the GPS, could be useful...

Why the cd/dvd? the laptop has one right? So whats the point of two (three if you count the HU)? Do you use alot of cd/dvds?

Front End.. I'm not going there... too much info and too much of personal pref... and most if not all of them can embed the AEM software in so... your call buddy

    other thoughts...

Dude you got three screens!!!! Throw them all in there, make one just for the AEM, one for the GPS, and the last for the FE....

how easy is it for you to reach the keyboard on the laptop with it in the tray? Are you planning on just the passenger using it? I only ask because of the AEM software... If your on the track and need to make an adjustment, is it something that you can do with the touch screen or would a keyboard have to be present?

You more than likely didn't get anyone else to post anything because your post raises alot of questions... I know I asked a couple. Overall, take what you have in your OP and compare that with other installs, you seem on par for the most part, just need to follow through on some more research. The Laptop section would be a great start, as well as the software section. The GREATEST and MOST INFORMATIVE Button of the WHOLE SITE is the:

    hope this helps...

    Thanks for the Reply Lucky,

The Car is going to be a street machine ... with light track Use.

I have revised my setup a little bit as far as placement of the Laptop ... at the moment I do not have heating / AC in the car but am looking into adding a system from Vintage Air which will most likely take up the space where I had intended on puttin the laptop under the dash on a pull out tray. Once I have the Evaporator unit fron vintage air if it turns out I can squeeze both under the dash I will go back to the laptop under dash setup.

For my revised setup I have made a overly colorful diagram laying out what im thinking for the basic setup. I might do without the usb dvd in dash. Was wondering if I could get some feedback on the setup ... do you guys see any major Newb Flaws...???

With the laptop in the trunk like this It means that I will have to mount my ECU where the serial input is accessable under the dash so that when Im tuning I can pull the laptop out of the trunk and use a secondary serial cable to tune with from the passengar seat. Not ideal but again with the heater i dont see everything fitting up front .. it is a very small car.

    --------
    Dell D600 mounted in trunk
    Xenarc 700ts in dash
Carnetix p1900 to power the two.
Carnetix p5v to pwr usb hub in dash
Creative digital music USB into existing aux input on alpine cd player in the car.
    Front end - Centrafuse
    USB GPS Reciever

Decided to start working on the part of the install that I know I can do without input from folks here... I made some MDF templates for my new dash in the 510 and mounted up my touchscreen switches and guages. I am either going to use the templates to mill out the dash in sheet aluminum or glass or carbon over the mdf.. might even vinyl wrap it as I had it before. I also got myself a cheapie underdash mount for the alpine deck.. simple but effective.

    Here is a few pics..

Laptop / AEM that im using

And one of the Car if anyone wants to see it.

How about under the seat? Putting the laptop under the seat that is... Under the seat is wasted space (unless you got one em fancy motorized contraptions) why not use it? Only problem I see with under the seat is dirt. Anyone who has taken a seats out know what I'm talking about unless its a fairly new car then its not like digging up king tut's tomb.
Or hell why not ditch the back seat? Who wants to sit back there anyway? Put a couple subs, mount your amps, the laptop and a fire extinguisher in a nice enclosure with glass or mdf or injected plastic.

Nice little Datsun. Must be killer to drive... Cant wait to see this finnished.
