First build critiques
hey guys. this is my first carpc build. i have been lurking these forums for a long time, and have read all of the faqs and numerous threads... i have built a few different pc's over the years, but never one designed for a car.so anyways here is what i am thinking for my build.
fast boot times
no lag between menus.
these are the components i plan on buying
Intel atom d510
corsiar 32gig ssd
front end/ gps
Centrafuse Auto Navigation
custom made case.
.................................................. .................................................. ..........................
now i have a few questions. what does everyone prefer for a front end. i was thinking either the centrafuse with navigation (do you have to buy the gps receiver thing separate?)... or i was maybe thinking about running roadrunner with garmin mobile pc.
and does anyone have anything to say about the components i have chosen?
Thread moved to newbie proposed forum.
I recommend Centrafuse. Whether you want the nav version really depends on if you depend on accurate GPS information. The maps in the nav version are a few years old and it doesnt appear they'll be getting new maps anytime soon. And for your gps hardware yes i would buy it seperate and i would recommend a globalstat BU-353 for your device of choice. I've had one for years and its always been top notch.

if you're using hybrid/s3 sleep then that board will be just fine.
also..if u dont want any lagg between screens...stay away from the ATOM + centrafuse combo.
centrafuse is a resource hog on the atom.
Also, the M4 is overkill for an Atom board. I'd go with an M2-ATX.
You can disable the animations between screens that would help lag.
Also you can use Garmin Mobile PC with Centrafuse, and I'd recommend the BU-353.
ok. sweet. so i can just get the regular centrafuse, and get garmin mobile pc... will it embed garmin mobile into centrafuse, or am i going to have to tab back and fourth between the programs?
what other mobo/cpu combo would you guys recommend in the under $120ish area?
i dont have that issue with my atom330 board (non-ion). Animation is enabled as well.

As far as Centrafuse, DO NOT BUY THE NAV VERSION. It comes with outdated maps. What you do is buy the standard version of CF3. Then go over to the destinator store and try the Windows Mobile version of destinator 9. It will install new current maps onto your PC, which you would drag to your WinMo phone instead you simply drag those maps into the CF3 Map folder. There is no point in paying for old outdated maps when you can update them for free right from the horses mouth. I really wish Flux would stop selling that old outdated NAV stuff and only sell the standard and let users figure out how to get the updated maps like we did. I use destinator because its simple, and it doesn't talk me to death. I just drive, tells me to turn and then tells me when I'm there. I was thinking of dropping destinator because I wanted live traffic routing, but thankfully someone made a plugin to work with destinator that gives me that ability, so its now a solid NAV solution for me.
It depends on the PC as far as the transition issues with CF3. Originally I tried CF3 on my laptop which is a 1.6 single core Celeron w/ 1 gig of ram and I honestly had no issues. When I installed it on my 1.6 single core Atom with 2 gigs, I noticed the lag. I went to options, turned off enhanced graphics and now CF3 runs fast and is very snappy like it should be.
