MeeGo looks cool, but it also looks like navigating it without a mouse/keyboard wouldn't be too fun.

I plan on installing ubuntu with xfce (much lighter than gnome) and then installing XMBC. Looks like a pretty sweet media center. It was designed for the xbox, so its easy to navigate.

They have a bunch of different skins, I like this one

tripzero, have you had a lot of problems with linux and touchscreen drivers?

Overkill from the aspect of cost. I expect with the type of apps on a carPC and a slow processor an inexpensive SSD will give the same user experience. The $100 Intel "V" SSD has slow write speed but probably would be little different than the more expensive models.

I don't mean the MeeGo netbook UX, but the handset or even the IVI ux:

Both of these are touchscreen friendly. Its also worth noting that XBMC is designed to be used on a TV, not a touchscreen. Don't expect it to be optimized for use in the car either. Have you seen nGhost? .

Yes, there are lots of issues. Using LinuxICE, there are less issues. I've had nothing but trouble with 10.04 and the egalax driver.

When I get meego going on my new system, I'm going to try using the built in kernel driver with some calibration values in xorg and see if that works better.

They don't exist do they? I recall that being one of the awesome features in MS's upcoming "longhorn" OS. But that feature was dropped along with all the other cool features.

they do... i just got a deal email from newegg that sparked interest and i thought i'd ask about it

    paper

drive - 7200 w/ 32mb cache /w 4bg ssd, but would that be on a separate partition or what? (install os on 4gb part and rest on disk, best of both worlds in one drive at a reasonable cost... seems too good to be easy)

That is a cool idea. Only thing is you cant use Raid 0 with them. Also the reviews seem to say there are file corruption issues.

It uses the SSD as a read cache. It was well reviewed by anandtech. Seems like possibly a good choice for carpc if it doesn't have file corruption issues.

seems like using ssd would be great for improving writes, but not so much for reads. Sure, if you are reading things over and over again it can be cached, but on boot, is all the files you need to read going to be cached on the ssd part? Probably not.

Go with the VM70 instead. It is cheaper, but preformance wise its similar to the Lilliput EBY701 which I also like. The VM70 though also comes with a headrest piece which would be awesome for your radio. You can just pop the headrest cover in there, mold it to the radio, then slide the screen in. If you have to take the screen out for repair, just pop it out.

Here is the CCFL VM70. Goes for 139.00 which includes shipping. I own one and stand by it.

Here is the LED V70-XB. It is brand new so I dont know how it works. It looks a little different then the VM70, but has all the same headrest piece and stuff. This screen is only 159.00.

Sorry to thread jack but was wondering if the vm70, you recommended, is it USB powered or do you need to hardwire it?
