Jeep Gc, infinity gold sound, have 3 different comps.. ??

Ok so i am debating on wether or not to put in a car pc into my jeep. it is a 99 limited and has the upgraded infinity gold sound system.

I have three options as far as what computer i can use
*A fairly new hp laptop running vista plenty of goodies on ram hdd and video is eh ok lol, but i would need to use it for other things too this is my best pc
    * An old hp laptop that overheats quickly especially when running apps(i guess the only advantage here is that it is not a desktop doesnt draw much power?
    * last is an old beater desktop i built maybe 2 years ago from old donated computers

Im not sure what size monitor i want probably a 7" to be flexible in options of where to put it..

I need to use the factory speakers most definantly. the setup at the moment is the infinity head unit and infinity amp under my seat. can i get rid of the head unit and use the pc to output to the amp? or would i have to keep the head unit?

What about power does this sort of thing kill the battery and whats the best way to hook up to it? the old cigarette outlet or go through the firewall and directly clamp the battery?

i went with HP laptop and the QuickDock 2.0 ... had some issues to work out, but everything is running well now and i'm finalizing the install this weekend: 2003 Grand Cherokee 4x4 Expedition Vehicle - Worklog (dockable HP Laptop)

edit - i don't know how well sound works with this setup as my whole carputer is auxiliary to my existing radio, not a replacement... mainly using it for nav/obd/service manuals/etc. theoritically though should not be a problem as the Quickdock has mic in and headphone out as well as an S/PDIF output. The cd changer cable also i believe has 2 wires that are analog audio that you can tap into for input to your factory radio.

double edit - here's the info for using the changer input as aux input on factory radios in GC: http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f197/...3/#post9992383

i can promise you that you'll run into some sort of problems... if you don't, your not doing it right

but nothing should be anything too major-- the most common problems are usually more related to setting up the software in the carpc the way you want it, and not the physical installation of it..

installation of carpcs is pretty generic for everyone= every carpc needs to get power from the battery, grounded nearby, and some way to send a audio source to the speakers.. all of this is pretty well covered in the faq's that i linked you to..

after that, it gets into the technicalities--add-ons like gps, and front ends..

just take it slow, and try to do what you can outside the car. my carpc took 3 months of bench testing before i even picked a day to install it..

just remember that this is a hobby, and as such, it is something that can always be tweaked and is never perfect..
