    Modular Construction

    Hello everyone ,

My CarPC project is new, but I have been lurking and reading for years now. Since CarPCs are so unique to each individual, and components for said PCs are so numerous, I have chosen to build my CarPC in phases.

    My goals:
    • Audio
    • Video
    • Internet
    • GPS Navigation
    • Hands-Free Cellular Use

    Phase I - Hardware
    Equipment (See current build HERE):
    • Asus M4A88T-I Deluxe
    • AMD Athlon II X4 610e 2.4GHz 45W
    • 4GB DDR3 SODIMMs
    • Kingston SSDNow V Series 2.5" 30GB SATA II Internal SSD
    • Opus 360w PSU

I still need to get an 8" or 10" touchscreen monitor, a 500GB or bigger data drive, a usb hub, and a radio/wifi/gps antennae.

    Phase II - Software
Right now I have none. I'm planning on WinXP or 7 32 Bit and RR. I have not looked at any GPS software. And I am on the fence about sound processing software like Audio Mulch or an external processor like the Bit One.

Phase III is simply installation and tweaking.

I have a question. One underlying goal is to use as few external pieces of equipment as possible. This has forced me to consider alternatives to things like the Bit One as stated above. But more importantly the Phoenix SOHO and Andrea USB card/mic. I want a software based solution I could integrate w/ my onboard sound card. I did a Google search and found a product called SoliCall Pro. Claims to do Echo and Noise cancellation in Win based machines. @ $50 / Lic. I'm tempted to try it when the time comes. Anyone see a problem w/ it playing nice w/ RR or CF 3.0? This is where things are fuzzy. I am thinking when system boots RR should auto run SoliCall in background. When a call is answered, somehow SoliCall should then be used to eliminate echo as RR FE mutes audio from media that was playing at the time. What am I overlooking?

Also, my motherboard does not have a serial connection. How would I hook up a push-button to initialize voice recognition for voice commands? Is there a way to do it w/ USB?

    Thanks,

    Mal

your hardware definitely seems good enough for onboard audio processing..

imo, the advantage to solutions like the bitone is to allow a product that has been designed around audio processing do the work, and it also gets the load off the processor(not a major deal in your case). another small advantage is that all the external Sp's seem to be more set-it-an-forget-it style of products, where a carpc route might be more suitable for tinkerers..

for the push button, i imagine you could add a usb-to-rs232 adapter to get this control.

Soundman you following me around this board ? Seriously though I appreciate your input. I want to do onboard processing, but I'm lazy . How steep is the learning curve? I know it is much more affordable than the Bit One or JBL-8. Then the question comes again, how will it be affected by software like SoliCall? The downside of me eliminating external equipment is making it all work in Bill Gates Land.

you need to post after i log in :P

just like everything else, the learning curve varies-- for me, i went crazy for a couple days, and then it all of a sudden everything just made sense. if you haven't seen it, i did do a basic how-to in the high-end section(with pictures!) using audiomulch, and one of my soundcards. it might be worth looking at that, and downloading the demo of AM and trying it yourself.

affordable is relative--console is $50, AM is $190, but this doesn't include hardware costs-- just to get them to run, you need a windows OS-$100, motherboard-$100, and processor-$100, and a soundcard-another $100-- so now you are up to a rough- estimate of $590 using AM, and still need to install, setup, and configure everything.

the bitone retails for $800, and there is only audio settings that need to be loaded..

another adavantage of the carpc route is the fact that you can control which level of products are used along the way, and bragging rights that you built all of it.. external processors offer none of this..

    for working with other software--

i don't foresee too much of a issue with this on the audio processing side...
i use VAC(virtual audio cable). when i set this as the primary audio output in windows, every sound--weather it be from windows, or from other programs, is sent through the virtual cable, and into the processing program-- where i manipulate, and reroute it to the correct part of the soundcard.

getting things like solicall to work with rr, or other programs is where i don't know enough to comment..
