    Question First CarPC

So i'm prepping to do my first Car PC this summer. I'm a heavily experienced PC maker and Modder, and i already have lots of hardware laying around. I'm also an experienced Audio Installer, from many personal builds over the last 10 years. So my first question for the community is a simple choice of some platform hardware.

I have 3 different Base platforms i can use for my project as listed below.

    Via EPIA-M10000
Acer Acer AspireRevo AR1600-U910H (single core Atom)
    ASUS M4A78LT-M AM3 760G HDMI Micro ATX W/ a dual core Athlon 2

All 3 have their merits from Low Power consumption(epia, Acer) to expandability(asus). I already own all of them for various reasons.

I'd like to be able to emphasize SQ, reliability, and responsiveness. I Live in PA and we have wide Temperature Variation from -10 to 110 throughout the year.

Which would you choose, and why?

sound quality has become such a generalized term... how far are you willing to take the sound quality? do $500 interconnects sound reasonable?

    1. the single core atom is going to be a little faster/better then the via board, but depending on the software you use, it might not be very responsive.
    2. overall, i would personally pick the asus board because i prefer to have too much power then not enough.

i built a carpc specifically because of the audio manipulation i could do with it-- i started with a atom board, but found that it could not keep up with my audio processing needs. so i got a 775 socket bard with a dual core pentium, and that has met all my needs from a carpc..

Sorry for the double post btw didn't realize the first one went through.

Basically it's going to be a bit of a tinkertoy, SQ in my opinion is high snr mostly. Nothing out of this world expensive.

I'll be picking up a set a seperates for the front and coaxials for the back. I already have a 15" Kicker comp DVC, but my last Kicker 4 channel started cutting out at moderate volume levels so i'll need to replace that. I was going to mod the PC into the old Kicker 4chan but if i go with the AMD i can't do that, however i can use the "Flare" pieces to make it visually fit in with the amps so that's not really a huge deal.

I'm a fan of making some neat "motorized" accents with a fusion brain or Arduino, and one of my Key requirements is going to be the Wi-fi so i can use my Droid to control some aspects of it as well as provide it with hotspot access for Internet radio. I already have GPS Via my phone so i don't really need that.

To be honest i'm starting to have some trouble justifying ~$400 for a touchscreen when i can pay about the same price for a nice Pioneer DVD HU that will be stable, already have a radio, and can access Pandora etc.

then you are really better off going with the pioneer unit.

i no longer try to convince anyone that a carpc is the best option, because part of the enjoyment so many get out of carpc's is the customization of the product-- you can't get that with any head unit.. this hobby is expensive, but it is still a hobby, so it's not for everyone.

i agree that the screens are too expensive, but there is really nothing that can be done about it when the entire group of carpc-ists make up such a small percentage in teh electronics category..
