    CarPC in a 2011 Camaro

I've always been interested in CarPCs, the last one I had was circa 2000-2002 Pentium 133 running Cajun Linux. It was quite neat.

Flash forward 10 years, and this is what I'm looking at building. I've started posting on various forums to get ideas, suggestions.. here are the resources I've tapped so far:

    * Camaro5 (GMLAN, Bezel, Audio, Car Wiring, other app specific stuff)
    * Meego (I'm an OpenSource developer, with years of Linux experience, will be working on making the MeeGo IVI a better experience)
    * QRZ.com (Ham Radio Associated options)
    * Here!

Basically I hope to do the following: Meld GPS, AM/FM/HD/XM Radio, OnStar, Onboard Controls, Audio, Aux Input, USB input, Navigation, APRS, Ham Radio control, Video all into one unit.

Some of the hardware I'm looking at using:
    ASUS at5iont-i
    M2 (Maybe M3?) Atx power
    Boomzbox
Frameless Lilliput 7" LCD w/ HDMI and touchscreen
Panasonic Slot-load drive (so I can re-use the slot that is included with the Camaro)
    160GB SSD Drive
    4GB RAM
    Intel WiFi + BT
    Sirfstar GPS

    Software Setup
    MeeGo Linux OS + IVI
gpsd to act as the gps server. This will allow me to use Navit for navigation, as well as send APRS signals out via NMEA sentences generated from gpsd
Boomzbox and XM through possibly wine. I've seen some talk of a port, but nothing yet.
OBDII and/or GMLAN software.. I have some java source code I'll play with to see if I can port it from android to MeeGo.

And thats about it! for now... ;-)

looks good. imo, 4gb is a little much for carpc-- usually 2gb is fine..

i am really curious as to how a install will go in the new camaro though. do you know if they have the same integration issues that earlier 2000-ish chevy's had, where they required separate modules for retaining factory functions.

heh, well this weekend I won an Intel Media mobo, i5 2500k and 8gb of ram. WAAAYY overkill (and overheat?) for a car PC but good for Meego Development. Virtualization in an IVI? =P

One of the things that turned me on to using a car pc instead of buying a nav + install kit is the advantage of directly interfacing with the GMLAN system. With any luck, I can build a QT app that will control car functions similar to what the OEM stereo does.

eh, i understand if it is on-hand/cheap/free, just not if you have to go and buy those parts at full price..

my pentium dual core does fine in-car, though, i believe the i5 is a couple leaps and bounds above that..

Yah, I understand. My original thought was to buy one of the atom boards out, or wait until September for the next generation.... The intel rep told me over the weekend though that they're going to be pushed until November.

The nice thing about the next generation is the dual core atom with mobo will be around $100. Add 4gb of ram on that and you have your baseline system.

But since this was free I can't complain. I was thinking of selling a lot of it in hopes the price diff would get me an SSD, but its not worth quite that much.
