Hello,
I have been thinking for a long time to get a car pc. But at this time, I think it might be easier to put in a tablet instead. I have a 2004 mazda 6 and I think running a tablet from there would be way more efficient then running a car pc. I was wondering if that is possible, and has anyone done it. Any suggestions on what kind of tablet, or anything like that. Thanks!

I've been running a SGT7 for some time now with a dual ganged pot for volume control. However you cannot permanently mount a tablet into your car like you do a carpc or a laptop due to heat. You could however if you remove the battery since its what gets damaged and doesn't allow you do even turn on the device when hot. On my SGT I had a HDMI Media Dock fiberglassed into my stock faceplate, turning it into a dock in my car. Worked awesome till I noticed a crack that I had to repair and I ended up selling things and trying other things and this and that. The SGT is awesome but to get better use out of it and have a funner experience the stock rom must go. However lately they have not fixed the audio output of the hdmi dock on CyanogenMod Releases. They have been working on it but working on other things is a higher priority.
So I decided to try other tablets finding out in my small space I cannot go larger than a SGT or Kindle Fire. Other vehicles could easily run larger tablets. My preference is the Nexus. Its the best tablet around and I wish I could have used it but after trying, there is no way.
I ended up picking up a laptop and a lilliput for cheap so I'm back to the carpc world. BUT installing Android 4.0 on the laptop dual booted with windows. I feel I'll have a better experience this way since I require windows to data log and tune my 600hp sports car.
Tablets are awesome but you can find yourself trying soo much or almost destroying the tablet easily. lol my first attempt at molding a dock resulted in buying a new shell for it after destroying it to get it out of the mold. Then later noticed that the tablet was somewhat odd shaped which prevented me from removing it easily, it wasn't square lol.
I hope all goes well with dual booting Windows 8 and Android ICS.
Very Interesting. I did have a car pc and for my car which is a mazda 6 I didnt know how to do the molding for the screen and figured a tablet would be more convenient. I do not want it permanently put in place. Maybe some kind of holder. See the mazda 6 has a map holder. Sucks Im at work and dont have pictures. But ill try to add links. Well the mazda 6 has a map box like this:

So I figure you can get some kind of holder and put it in the map box to hold the Nexus 4 tablet and be able to take it out when you need to.

So I would use this car mount and fit it in my map box and try to put it in there.
What do you think? I am really not that talented with molding boxes and what not. I am a nerdy bio engineer. But I am trying to learn. I think a tablet would be easier, and running android is nice. I have rooted my android phone to make it so I can use it as a mobile hot spot, and then us the tablet to have gps and internet. I think I am going to still do it.
Its pretty sweet you were able to dual boot but android and windows. I didn't know that was possible on a computer.
Anyways, if you have any suggestions for me and any other links for me to read that be great. Thanks so much for helping me out.
I have a Galaxy Tab Plus, which is one of the narrower 7" tablets out there, and I have a Mazda6. The thing is still not small enough to fit straight into the map pocket, though. What I mean is, it will fit in the map pocket, and it's actually a really good fit, but the actually opening is not tall enough to let the tablet go straight in. You have to angle it in, then maneuver it back the way you want until friction takes over and it rests in the opening. So, unless you modify your housing, you won't be able to use that tablet mount to hold it.
My plan is to remove the lid of the map pocket and fabricate a housing for the tablet. I haven't figured out all the details yet, but I have an idea of what I want it to be like in my head. I will start working on it next week, hopefully.
By the way, if you're interested in modifying your car at all, you should check out 6crew.com. The site doesn't cover ICE or CarPCs in any way close to what this one does, but it's great for other aspects of the 6.
