First, there is no flip out screen that is reccommended. The only reason to do this is lack of space. If you suck at fabrication, but have the room, pay someone to mold in a screen. Even with the cost of fabrication, it might come out to equal prices considering hte hefty difference in price.

The 2 brands are Lilliput and Xenarc. That's right, 2 brands. Small VGA screens are neither common, nor are they in high demand with respect to all the composite quality screens for other HU's. So there are 2 companies that see the market and take advantage of it by selling us their stuff at outrageous prices. But hey, what are we to do?

All the brands on eBay (I should say most, to all) are all re-branded lilliput models. Same screen, same controller, same everything but the casing has a different name and logo.

All motorized units will fail. Not if they fail, but when they fail you will have one hell of a bad day. You wont be able to get your screen out, and you will be out of $400.

The non-motorized kind aren't as cool, and the only advantage over mold-ins is the space saving design.

So, why are you going flipout?

And incase I haven't made my point, here it is bluntly: There is no good solution.

Even if you don't have the space to mold your screen.... You could just place it on top of your dash. May not look as nice, but any solution is better then those flip-outs.

the reason i dont want to fab it in is because, one i dont know how to fab, im sure i could do it if i knew the materials and steps to do. I didnt know people were so against flip outs LOL. I have the room i have a 2002 VW GTI, the stock radio is a double din unit, so there is room for sure. i guess ill have to find a fab shop and get a quote. thanks for the input

The dash on the GTi is perfect for a 7" screen. If you're willing to go a bit more indepth, the 8" will fit in there great as well.

8" would be awesome but thats alot of fab work. I just found a post of someone making a kit for the MK4's, screw the screen right to the plastic frame and it snaps in, looks stock its awesome.

Good job. There is also somebody in the ex-classifieds (Archives now?!) that does fab work as well. Just giving you more options. I think he charged $100 to $300 for it.
