    2005 G35 Carputer CONOPS

    Hello,
I'm just in the design phase of my carputer project and I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to make the system work. I made a CONOPS for one, maybe some people can critique it for me or give me some ideas.

    thanks.

I'm planning on doing a setup very similar to yours and when I start getting some time I will begin my research. I'm not going to use a dock and also I'm going to power the usb hub from the inverter just for added comfort. How do you plan to power the TS? Inverter or car battery? Sorry I didn't critique more but I'm still a noob. Good Luck!

you're driving a g35, don't use the cig lighter for power, run a line to the trunk, and do a nice job on this. Do that car some honor!!!

Also, look into a startup/shutdown controller, other then ups

Yeah, don't go the inverter route. It will most likely introduce noise into your system.

Any other questions, let me know. I am on my second iteration of a G35 CarPC, although I didn't use a laptop, I built a CarPC specifically for my car. Take a look at my cardomain page in my .sig for a basic understanding of it.

Thanks for the input guys, I'll agree that running the line from the Cig power wasn't my first choice, I just didn't want to have to tear up all my carpeting and trim in order to make it look right. I had planned on running the wire from the cig along behind the dash and into the glovebox where I can fit my laptop. Everything else would be stowed in the upper compartment. But I'll look at running a line off the battery.

    Thanks again.

Why are you so concerned with pulling parts of the interior? It's not like you're going to do something to it all that won't be able to be put back.

Installing a CarPC in your car should be perminant...not an afterthought.

Cig. lighters don't provide a lot of amperage (maybe 10 amps?) to boot.

I'm planning on using a laptop and I was told that pure sine wave inverters don't create noise. Is this true? Also, when using a laptop I feel that a DC-DC power source may be more trouble than it's worth. Has it been done?

I feel you seem to be rushing to conclusions a little...

There are products out there made for this purpose!

No need to recreate the wheel...especially when it's already been created and refined!

Because I just dropped 25 g's on this car and I'm not looking to do anything to screw it up too bad. I figure the less I have to tear up the less likely I will screw something up. The carpc is not an afterthought, I completely intend for it to be permenant, and that is exactly why I want to minimize the Murphy factor while doing the install. It is about striking a balance between risk and reward.
