    Howdy Y'all, Newbie w/ a Shelby Cobra

I'm hoping to build an FFR 1965 Shelby Cobra replica & I def. want to add some new & modern features.

    Plan:
    7-8" Monitor:
has to have transreflective coating for open top
unknown on whether I want touchscreen, depends on how I interface w/ the PC

    PS2:
play DVDs & allow the passenger to play games while parked/cruisin

    GPS navigation:
    hopefully displayed on the monitor

    Wireless:
Possibility, but not positive it'd be needed

    CarPC:
Harddrive to store any type of file
Takes care of playing MP3s over stereo system
    Recieves & plays FM stations
USB slot/s to allow transfer of data & MP3s

    Stereo:
    6.5" amplified components

I don't know how I'm going to get there, but hopefully this forum will help out a lot.

Well good luck with everything, and I have a few suggestions.

First, forget the PS2. You can get emulators for PC's for the PS2 and everything to atari's pong and inbetween. SNES being my favourite.

Then you can get USB controlled gamepads, or just hack one yourself, so it feels and looks like a PS2, N64, PS1, SNES, NES, anything. Not so sure about xbox though... I havent looked into that really. And for the PS2 emulation, no via boards obviously, but for the cost difference of the PS2 you can upgrade what you would have spent on the motherboard to one that can handle it for the same price with more functionality.

And you definately want a touchscreen. And the transflective are all TS anyways. But it comes in mighty handy when going between screens, and it has the "bling" factor with it. Of course you can have multiple pointer devices on 1 system. So you can have a touchscreen, and build in touchpads to the centre console, and have a scroll wheel, or joystick or something all working in tandem.

How far along are you with the cobra?

I'm buying the donor car & tearing it apart this summer. I expect at least 3+ years on this project.

What would I do about playing DVD movies if I didn't have the PS2?

...you would have a computer in your car dude, they've been able to play back dvd's long before ps2 was even a thought. Besides, you can store movies on your hard drive...

What kind of phone do you have, because most can be used to have your carputer access the internet... I think that this is what you ment by "wireless"

I am very undecided on what type of computer I'll be using. Right now a laptop is actually looking like the cheapest & best option but I have a lot of research to do on the forums. I'm very familiar with a 'search' feature so I hope not to get to many complaints about that. But I'm always open to suggestions from others.

idk... I guess laptops aren't a bad way to go, I've just always prefered having a pc built in, always felt I had more room to play

So would I just use an external DVD drive to hook up to the homebuilt PC?

or a internal drive.... it all depends on where you mount the pc...

most of us have the pc somewhere in the trunk area... so we use USB DVD drives in the dash
