Not really. Just set the bios to boot from usb device and then feed it power. The down side is trasnfer rate. Running your main HD from an external housing through a USB port is VERY slow compaired to the IDE/SIDE bus connections.

And then also why would you do that? You can house the harddrive externally and then run an IDE cable into the case.

You do know that an external harddrive is just an internal harddrive with a case right? Nothing special if you were thinking of durability or anything.

You can deff. have an external hard drive for putting new files onto your carputer... But, you have a couple of better options.

Have two hard drives, one for the OS, and all programs, then have the second for just music, and have this one be external

Have your external hard drive for music again, but instead of a hard drive, have memory cards for your OS and programs

Have a hard drive for your os, programs, and music, then have the external for transfering music onto the hard drive in your car.

These are all better imho then having an external running your os

Microcenter!!! Great place. They just opned one near me and I got a free 2GB pen drive. The only problem is, I need to transfer about 50 gigs form my main PC to the Carputer. Need an ethernet hub for that.
