New to CarPuters and seriously confused!

Hello all. I am confused about this stuff. I was going to build a computer using some small components but have now received a dell computer I have absolutely no use for so I figured why not stick it in the trunk and run with that.

I have an E36 BMW and have seen pictures where the HVAC controls are rerouted and a 7" screen is mounted near the sunglass holder - that is probablly what I would want to do. However, I have the following questions:

    1. Will I still need a radio?
    2. Will I be able to listen to XM/Sirius?
    3. What do I need to have voice controlled navigation?

Thanks for the help. I'm excited about my new journey and can't wait to start!

    1) You dont *need* one, that is up to you. There are radio's available for the PC, and there is also a very current HU/HU-less thread going on. Personally, once you get a computer, why would you ever listen to terrestrial radio? Advertisements and annoying morning shows versus all music.

    2) Yes and Yes

    3) A noise cancelling mic, and navivoice

A radio in most cars not only receive radio stations but also amplify the sound for you. My car has an amp for the back speakers but the front speaker amp must be part of the radio.

Check out your setup before yanking the radio out. You may need an amp for some or all your speakers.

Also watch out for some levels coming out of the PC. It may not be strong enough for car amps to amplify without also amplifying noise.
