I have been using the 2.5" notebook drive in my setup for almost a year without any problems. My car has a very, very stiff suspension. You will be fine with one of them.
I see the store sells a couple of Seagate extreme environment drives, but they are puny 40GB and cost almost as much as the other larger drives.
Are special shock proof drives necessary for the car environment, or are notebook drives good enough in general?

I used a regular 2.5" drive for 6 years with no problem. Horizontally mounted too.

I am more worried about the temperature then the shock/vibration. If it gets down to -40C, I dont think many hard drives will operate. The biggest benefit to those automotive grade drives are its capability to operate in low temperatures. But then again...not everyone has to deal with -40C winters like I do, so I dont know if this applies to you.
Holy crap! When it gets to -40C, you should be sipping 18 yr old single malt while sitting next to a roaring fire!

That should help answer a few questions as well.

OK, Just use a laptop harddrive. They are designed for the shock becasue they are made for portable systems. There are the new laptop solid state drives available. Take a look at those.
I've had mine horizontally mounted, vertically mounted, on wood, fixed, separate and had no problems. It's even in my trunk where it gets about 40 degrees in the summer here in Calgary and about -40 in the winter. The only problems I have with it are that it won't spin the drive in temperatures lower than -10. So on those days I have no media but otherwise perfect. I just have a regular 2.5 inch Samsung laptop drive.
