Just got me thinking, i have a slot load dvd drive for my carpc, and two or three usb 2.5" hard drives sitting around. Gonna see if i can get the drive powered over the USB from one of the HDD cases. Also, I've never had any problems powering the HDDs with only one USB plug, though it did come with two.. 2.5" HDDs only draw 500mA of current, which is the max USB can supply..

I purchased a Samsung slot load external DVD SE-T084 drive from Newegg because of the possiblity of bus-powering the device, since the PC is in the trunk and I want the drive in my dash. I found that the 16 ft usb cable length is too long for the unit to be bus-powered though, so I'm going to get a powered usb hub and instal in behind the dash. The drive works fine with a 3 to 6 ft cable for power and data.
