Slot Load CD DVD Drive - what IDE-USB adapter with NO AC adapter?

    Hi,

I'm looking for a slot-load CD/DVD drive to install below my Xenarc fold out monitor, and want to find a suitable ide to usb adapter.

Lots of them come with AC adapters. I know the power adapter is NOT required for laptop 2.5" HDDs, but it IS required for 3.5" HDDs - so i assume its required for slot-load drives too????
    eg http://store.mp3car.com/Bytecc_BT_20..._p/com-012.htm

I want one which is USB powered, similar to the external drives which are powered by only USB. Can someone suggest a solution?

I doubt you'll find one that can run off of a single USB connection, but the USB cable on my 2.5" IDE adapter has two USB connections to draw more power...it's possible that a setup like that may work. Good luck!

Yeah i dont mind using 2 x USB's to power it! Just NO or AC/DC adapter preferably.

That mp3car one is an enclosure, ideally i just want the adapter itself, seeing as the drive will be built into my screen. However i could get the enclosure and strip it down if i cant find what i want!

I use this ATAPI-IDE adaptor on my DVD-ROM drive:
    http://www.directron.com/cddvdadapter.html

And then this USB-IDE adaptor: (or do a search on Newegg.com for "usb ide adaptor")
    http://www.directron.com/bt200.html

However, the ATAPI-IDE connector needs a floppy power connector.

Hi, this is my first post so I thought I'd just jump in.
Go here: I bought two of these a couple weeks ago for $6.50 each.
    http://www.centrix-intl.com/details.asp?productid=435
discard the case and just use the 50pin to usb adapter and if you need it, the USB power adapter (you'll need two available USB ports for that option).
You can also buy just the adapter and the USB power cable seperately but that will cost twice as much and you'll still need to buy a second USB cable.

I bought the crap one from centrix. It doesn't come with a dual USB powered cable. It just has 1 usb connector, which isn't enough to power it.

I ended up going with Croopers recommendation

Just pull the power off the floopy disk connector from your PS

Fortunately I bought 2 which makes taking a picture easy.

This shows the two cables and all the parts you need. They are sitting on a picture of the car I'm building.

This shows the slovenly way I'm building the computer (if you look carefully, you'll see streetdeck running on the monitor and in the foreground the DVD drive with 2 cables exiting the back.

And this shows that the vehicle is more than vapor and far less (waaaay far less) than roadworthy.

About the directron IDE adapter --up until two weeks ago that is what I was using. It was an integral part of the system while I installed the operating system and most of the software. In short, it works great. Unfortunately my computer is in a very small case and the DVD drive is going to be somewhat remote. There is no way to get an IDE cable outside of the case without using a very large can opener and it looking like I used a very large can opener. With USB I haven't the length limitations and it's designed to run external to the case.
