build system to run GReddy EMU in twinturbo nitrous injected 3/S

    First, let me wave hello!

Since I can't stand the idea of a laptop flailing around my interior, I'm here to learn how to put together a system to run GReddy eManage Ultimate in my TwinTurbo Nitrous Injected 1st Gen Stealth. (now you know what the name means! )

GReddy recommends win98, Me 2000 or XP for an OS, and they recommend PIII 500mhz or better, 256 Ram, 20mb+ available, 1024x768 res 16 bit, USB 1.1 or better + I need a serial port.

Of course I want this for movies and tunes as well.

Hopefully, I can learn what I need, place some orders and have UPS showing up by the middle of next week... Any advice is greatly appreciated.

quick question... to get my setup up and running, and to give me a little more time to learn more here on this forum... Is it possible to take my PC, install a 12v power supply, and velcro the thing in my car? I NEED to run my new piggyback controller immediately.

That depends on the specs of the PC. I'm assuming you're talking about a desktop-style PC that uses an ATX-compliant PSU.

Now, if you're talking about the laptop, it might be possible, depending on the power requirements of the laptop. Look at the output voltage of the power brick.

Thanks for the reply. All I have right now is my desktop PC. I've been shopping for a laptop on eBay for the past couple days, but the right deal hadn't come along, and I started searching for everything I could read on "carpc's" and "carputers" I wandered on in here this evening, and I can quickly see that there's going to need to be ALOT more planning than I can afford (time-wise)

I have just sunk close to $5000 in parts alone into my 3/S. I have installed hybrid turbos, a Venom Nitrous oxide system, larger injectors, upgraded fuel system just to mention a few... the Greddy Emanage Ultimate is what will allow me to bring the car to life, as factory ECU's prohibit power gains from most mods.
I thought I could just plug into my PC in the garage, up/download, then disconnect and go out for a run, rinse and repeat as necessary. OHHH nonononono. I need a capable lappie hooked up in the car while I'm driving.

I do have a small power inverter. What I asked in the 2nd post was with the intention of using that inverter or else some sort of new power supply. this would be just to jury rig the PC into the car so I can get some base MAPs created and installed.

As for a full on Carputer, I want to take a little time to learn more, so I can do things "right"

If anyone here has a laptop for sale that would meet my current requirements, I could sure use something inexpensive for a temporary solution

I see that GReddy calls for USB1.1 or better. when did most manufacturers switch from 1.0 to 1.1? likewise, when did most go on to 2.0?
A LOT of piggybacks/diagnostics use SERIAL port connections, and I'd like to avoid using serial/USB converters. Ultimately, I'd like USB2 AND serial ports (haven't found a cheap lappie with both yet though. )

and as for the 1024x768 resolution, isn't that going to be hard to get out of a Lilliput (or similar) touchscreen? what makes the touchscreen work anyway? I used to have a panasonic toughbook with a touchscreen, and there were VERY FEW applications that that would work for

What are the specs of the desktop?
We can help you determine if your "little inverter" will work for you or if there is a suitable DC-DC power supply to replace the existing PSU so you can run it in the car.

If you are set on getting a laptop, get it! Then let us know what it says on the back of the power brick, so we can select an appropriate inverter for you. If you want a laptop purely for the purposes of tuning the ECU, a cheapo inverter that plugs into your ciggerette lighter socket will do.

The technological world made the jump to USB 2.0 around 4-5 years ago, so whilst shopping for a cheap laptop, if it doesn't have USB 2.0, its most likely too old to be of any use!
FYI, USB 2.0 is backwards compatible with USB 1.0 & 1.1
