Hardware.
I have an old Dell D500 laptop. 1.2G centrino, 1 gig ram and 40 gig hdd.
This will be connected to a 8" external touchscreen.
Will be powered from a 12volt auto adapter. Relay will throw laptop into suspend when the car is turned off and button will unsuspend. Easy mods to do to a laptop with battery backup
All going into a Landcruiser FJ62.
GPS is a Garmin eTrex. Serial connector.

Now. What I am asking is what is a good simple setup for such a setup. I mainly want to use GPS and mp3's to my head unit. .
Will be mainly used offroad so was thinking of Goole Earth with gecachr as potential software
