Dell Lattitude D600 Laptop startup questions

I've read quite a lot on the forums, also about D600 laptops and there's something that strikes me as odd. If I check the normal AC/DC converter that came with this laptop it takes a 100-240 volts input and a 19,5 output @ 3,4 A. Same goes for the laptop, it takes 19,5V @ 4,4A as input according to the sticker on the back.

How come I see everybody talking about 12V inputs? Can I simply use a 12V DC-DC regulator to stabilize my power supply? Another question; why would I use a regulator if I can use a car charger, what's the advantage/disadvantage of a regulator vs a car charger?

A simple regulator isn't going to do squat for you.
A Carnetix P1900 or P2140 is what you need. It will provide regulated 20v for your laptop.

If you want to use a car charger, that will be fine, but the Carnetix also includes a startup/shutdown controller and the ability to add on modules to provide other regulated voltages (5v or 12v) for peripherals.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Under normal circumstances, a signature would go here.
