    First draft system set-up

    Hey all,

I am new to all of this car computer stuff and so I will have quite a few questions over the next few months as I put mine together.

After the research that I have done so far I have somewhat of an idea of what I want to use. My main question/goal of this post is to know if there is anything missing from my imagined computer. Before I outline what I am thinking of using, I'll quickly describe what I hope this to become:

    Hardware -

1 - The most important aspect of the system is that it will be permanently installed and hidden inside the dash. ie, nothing in the glove box and/or underneath the seats.

2 - Instant or nearly instant on when the car starts.

    Software -

1 - Something other than windows (lightweight OS)

2 - Easy navigation from the touch screen to the radio/mp3, controls and nav/GPS

    3 - Video playback (DivX, .264, ...)

I hope that that makes sense.

Here are the products that I am thinking of using:

    PSU - M2-ATX 160w car power supply

    Mainboard/CPU - VIA EPIA 1300

    HD - Seagate Barracuda 250GB

FM Tuner - Haven't picked one out yet - PCI card slot?

GPS - Haven't picked out - USB port?

    Touchscreen - Lilliput 7" 4:3 screen

Those are the for sure items. Bonus items would be Wifi, BlueTooth and Mobile internet (cell service).

Is there anything that I am missing? Would those items make a complete system? Are there similar products that you prefer?

    Thanks again for the help.

You will not see instant, or nearly instant power on...I think the best systems are getting 20-30 sec out of standby or hibernation.

To playback Divx, DVD, H.264, you will need power. I am not sure what a EPIA 1300 is.

Lightweight OS? Like what? I ran winamp, Moving map software, and netstumbler on a P120 system...with win98...and I think 64M
