    Removing car radio...

    Hi,

I have a question in general:

I have spoken to one of the expert consultants for BMW just now. He has mentioned to me that once you remove the E46 radio, that you will start having trouble with the rest of your electronics. Is this correct?

The reason I am asking is he mentioned that when you take your car in for a service that those guys will have endless hasstles with the computer not giving the correct information, due to the radio being removed? Can someone verify this for me and if they have experienced and such problems before? Does the E46 system still run without any problems or hasstles once the radio is removed?

    Then on the sound side:

I need to get an AMP for the car. I am not looking for a lot of base, however I now need to drive the 4 speakers from the 4channel AMP.

What are the speakers dimensions that will fit to the standard originals?

Can I also put in new speakers instead of using the existing ones? Is there any recommendations, as all I want is to take the stock standard factory speakers (If their output would be 30Watt RMS, and multiply this by 3).

I am looking for clarity and good sound, also some bass... but my major concern is: I don't want to cut and drill new holes I want to use the existing speaker fitments, if I decide to sell the car in a couple of years so that I can put back the originals?

    Your responses are greatly appreciated?

Software developer with extreme ideas requiring assistance...

    Hi,

    I own a BMW E46 325i 2001

I have read numerous posts and got really interested in the idea of placing a complete PC solution into my car

However I have a couple of questions:

I have a right hand-side drive and most if not all images and mods are done on left hand-side drive, will this work for right-hand side?

I would also be more interested in adding additional mods for USB plug-ins in front of the dash close to the monitor (most likely place would be to add USB extension cables using the accessory grid – where traction control buttons are, etc…)

I would like to know more about the car specifications which I think won't be easily given by the dealerships (ie: wiring schematics, computer on-board input/outputs):

I want to write my own software to integrate almost ALL possible ideas and solutions, which I will most probably distribute here once finalized as I want to start making my car “alive” ie:

When hooked up to GPS navigation systems, to automatically put on your indicator 5 meters before you turn and turn it off as soon as you have finished turning (obviously all options will be configurable and customizable).

I would also like to integrate voice activation to let you control you entire PC with voice prompt (which will in turn control certain functions in your car) and interconnection with mobile phones, etc. the idea list I have is huge.

The sky is the limit (once I get the PC into my car) – which is my first obvious step

But I first need to start with the basics and work my way from there.

I cannot decide if I should use an ITX carputer or a laptop (as I have seen some users do)?

I like the idea of mounting a carputer (fixed) into the car, however my boot space seems a bit little:

Any assistance and advice would be greatly appreciated!

Just above the ashtray you will see I have a button called 'Asc': I want to add extra extended USB cables from the boot to add them next to this button.

I also want to put the LCD screen where the radio currently is and move the aircon down and remove the extra holder above the ashtray.

My problem is a bit with boot space:

(left side of the boot - I assume the guys normally remove the CD shuttle section to place the PC in there)?

(right side of the boot - the battery is below the black holder, which I am not sure if it is a good idea to place PC there as I might need space if I need to get to to battery)?

Again I would really appreciate any advice and assitance or help that could be offered, in any form, wheather it be products to purchase and use.

Just know I want a powerfull PC As I want 2GB of RAM with atleast 2.4GHZ duo core, or nano...

As I also have plans later to add two extra monitors in the head rests for other passangers to be able to view and interact with (on the same PC), thus I would require something powerful.

Will keep you posted and thanks.

Most BMW service manuals are available online. Probably the best place to start for car specific information.

Well you are somewhat correct. It seems to be a trend to place the most commonly used buttons on the left because they were developed for LHD. For instance, the BMV2 skin in RoadRunner, the Music button is on the left, as well as the list areas on the right with nav buttons on the left. There was a similar thread around here about converting to RHD so the lists would be on the left and the nav buttons on the right. Not sure if anyone did it, but it is just a skin file change. Moving things around that way. Might take an hour or two for a basic skin.

Hi thanks for the response, Toaster, as I though of a couple of other things which is a bit different for the LHD to RHD also:

In general you have more space when inserting an LCD with a LHD as appose to a RHD? Am I correct on this statement? As on the RHD there is little room to the right hand side of the radio, as the steering directly sits next to it, which is a bit of a concern for me if I would have enough space (since the LHD has got more space on the right hand side of the radio).

Referring to the LCD connections all being on the right, I was concerned about running wires on RHD as all the wires or connections might not fit due to limited space on the right or does this actually work with RHD (having enough space for all LCD connections and USB cables to be run through)- If you have a look at my first image you will note that space to the right is very little, also I might be assuming incorrectly as the LCD won't use up all the sace, that is why I need to get the benzel?

What are the actual dimensions for the benzel required on this model (viewing opening, and space available next to openings, etc.)?

Please can someone also guide me through the beginnning phases? I have read a lot of posts and know what this is about, but I don't know where to start?

A double din is a double din. It varies by make/model of car, not by RHD/LHD. There is exactly the same amount of room, it is just mirrored. And the centre of a mirror is the same thing...

Ok, thanks, do you have any ideas where I can get such a unit (good quality) at a good price?

And any more suggestions on where to start of with, I suppose I might not get a lot of assitance in this ragards...? I have asked a couple of questions, and have some more.

One new one would be, normally with your CD shuttle players they have standard built in protection against bumps in the road, and shock protection?

What will happen with the PC being fixed to the car frame, does most of the cases have such protection / shock protection for bumps in the road, as my concern would be that each time it gets a bit of shock / bump it might reboot the PC? Any ideas on this in particular?

    Thanks

Not a chance in hell. For two reasons.

    1. Unless you are using Military grade GPS you will not have that accuracy of position. Search on the forum and you will find enough people complaining that their GPS position is about 100-200 meteres/yards behind. Non Motionary you have about 25 meters of error.

    2. Have you not read the BMW handbook? BMW drivers do not use their indicators.
