Building a carpc using an old desktop

I am new to this hobby, but have been dying to start on a project. I have a dell desktop that I am willing to sacrifice for this project. I am looking for the right DC power supply and VGA monitor, so if anyone out there have any suggestions, please send them my way. I really want to know if I can use my desktop components to build this new carputer.

Yeah go for it. I was about to put my old PIII. I even made slim case for it from my old vcr lol. But I didn't know how to power it. I didn't like idea to have inverter in my car. So I never finished that project. Now in my new install i'm going to use hp slimline. Yes its a desktop but but its got mini mobo. I still have to get opus 250w to power that baby desktop.
About screens and other hardware its all up to you, how much $ you can spend on it and what you are going to use your computer for.
    Good luck with your project.

Using an old system is a great way to save money. With the exception of the inverter and touchscreen, my whole carpc was built from free parts that people threw away. One disadvantage of using an old system is that its kind of bulky to have an entire desktop case sitting in your trunk compared to buying a compact ampie case + mini-itx board. My trunk space has almost been cut in half by putting in a carpc and sub.

Without knowing the specs of the system you're considering, it's impossible to make a suggestion.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?
