Got mine working finally! You do need to power the interface it turns out.. no matter whether it's USB or Serial.

As for which one. It really depends which PC you're going to use. If you have serial port, you can get the serial one. If not, get the USB one.
The USB one is just a USB/serial emulator anyway, so it should work with any setup.
I went for the USB one as it means I will always be able to use it, even if I change my laptop in the future and only have USB.

Thanks. I intend to use the serial port for HD radio, but was willing to toss that for the ibus interface, but I feel much better about getting the USB version.

I also want to get the USB version. I blew my budget on the car pc, so now I have to wait before I can do purchase of this unit. The foreign currency from my side is much more expensive. For me 45 Euro is very expensive as my currency is 9 times weaker

Thus I will have to save up and get one maybe in July...

    Guys,
I've asked a similar question in the e46fanatics forum.
    See the whole thread here.

Here's the rundown from post #5 over there:
    - Would I be able to control everything listed in the IBus (and more) with connecting to the KBus?
    - If so, what's the best way to connect to the KBus? GT1 DIS? P.A.Soft? Carsoft?
For Sale: Carputer (CarPC) & RCA Y-Adapter
Newsflash: Take a look at my unsold stuff above, thanks!
Up Next: Make an OBD to Serial cable & Redo the "MMI buttons"

I have already finished my setup, but I am shy on pictures and things... lol I like to work and not take pictures all the way along. Setup took me sometime, but in the end was well done, because all parts can be put back when I decide to upgrade to newer model of BMW

I have a massive system in-place, I am also busy programming my own software for it... and awaiting the IBUS interface so I can connect it and take pictures: My setup is not done until I get this IBUS interface

Maybe someone can ask Rolf nicely to send me a USB one for charity... - also I will be able to use it as research for the development I will do for this unit inclusive (as I am from a developing country - 3rd world, but lately with all the power cuts we seem to be leaning toward 4th world country ... haha)...

I will pay for postage... hehe

Don't know if this will answer your question, but it's a start:

many wires here. the only one that is not documented is a white cable. i assume this is the i bus. since it is serial i only need one cable right?
there is no pre-wired cd changer i-bus wire in the trunk for european built e46 year 2003/4 model which have a business cd radio / hifi system (10 loudspeakers).

i have i bus in the head unit on old round pin 7 which i extended to trunk via
    a) separate wire or
    b) used an unused head unit to amplifier wire since i completely replaced the stock amplifier with 2 channel amplifier (therefore don't need seperate wires from hu to amplifier for rear and front channels)

    now i bus interfaces works.

I have a Resler USB version that works fine on USB power alone. Just the IBus wire connected. When I had it powered via the CD changer connector I had strange behavior such as no clicking sound on directionals, no seat belt alarm, random dash lights (door open when it wasn't, trunk//boot open when it wasn't, etc). Powered only on USB everything works as expected.

    (edit: my E46 is a 2000 323Ci (US))
