    Newbie Needs Help

    Hi ppl, i recently brought a mini and am looking to put a nice computer install into it for my ICE.
    I have a few things to think about:
    • cost must be kept down (poor student i'm afraid)
    • ebay is a possibility
    • i am good with computers so not afraid to get my hands dirty so to speak
    • space if limited, would need one din slot motorized tft touch screen, computer somewhere else (possibly a one din slot PC)

    Basically if you have a budget install like my ideas, or, any suggestions on what i want then that would be great! thanks!!!

    You'll quickly learn that this is a true DIY type hobby.

    There's a TON of information on these forums related to what you're asking. I'd recommend taking a look in the work-logs section to see how others have implemented their builds and see what problems they have run into and how they have overcome them.

    I'd also spend time reading the FAQs both in the nav bar and in the FAQ sub-forum as there's a wealth of information there that will help you as well.

    and enjoy your new hobby!

    What is the budget that you're working with? Usually single din unit carpcs have a bad reputation and the single din flip out screens are not cheap. PM me if you have any other questions.

    wel i was thinking of buying one of those motorized ones off ebay, possibly a lilliput one? i would ideally like to be able to put the pc behind the dash or something so single din is not necessary really, as long as there's an easyish was to turn it on/off really

    I'd do some research about the motorized screens on here. There's a LOT of talk about them. As for turning it on/off, I'd suggest you do a bit more research...there are products out there that make it so that your computer will turn on and off with the ignition of the car.

    I'd type "Review (name of that Lilli moto screen)"
    There's got to be some unfortunate/lucky fellow who can tell you about HIS experience with the product. You will find a verrry broad spectrum of reviews (that will surely serve to confuse you further!).

    Unless some company makes some radical strides in engineering / quality, I have heard
    much poor reviews on moto screens getting stuck, or just quitting...

    I'm old school. Yeah, we thought that James Bond stuff was cool, but the boyz who could afford those toyz seemed to have a lot of grief over them.

    {{{Begin Rant}}}

    You see, my friends, if it was Good Old American Technology and Ingenuity , then MOST of these moto screens and other gadgets would work.

    But the Chinese JUNK, such as my crappily made, filmy touchscreen Lilliput 629...has totally invaded our markets. And what's so verrry irksome (beside the Chinese-to-Amarikun semi-translations in their manuals), is that these creeps represent their products as having the highest technical accuracy, quality, specs, whatever...
    Evil liars

    ...When it's obvious to anyone who's been around for a coupla years that the quality is just not there!

    So we mod their junk, we hack their junk apart and re-design it, we find the time in our busy schedules to design and build our own eqpt.

    {{{End this Rant}}}

    Just to get MY setup up and runnin' (see my pics), I mounted my Lilli on gooseneck mount that works wonderfully. My car has dbl DIN stock stereo, and am considering next move of taking Liili apart, and installing in dash...

    Bottom line here is to have a lot of fun, and not let the seriousness of choices, design, and headaches in general take the joy out of this mad obsession.

    happy carpc'ing!

    one thing to concider w/ the mini is w/ a flip up screen depending on if you have the regular mini, or the s. you'll be blocking your speedometer, or nav control unit. With your car you might want to consider what Brucedog did w/ the gooseneck, which is a really good alternative because w/ a gooseneck it's easy to move around the screen to where you want it.
