An introduction and a question (laptop remote turnon)
I'm currently installing a carputer into my turbocharged 1993 Nissan 240sx. I won't bother posting pictures because it looks like any other 240 out there from the outside, I spend my money on go fast parts, not show.
Anyhow, I'm currently building the following setup:
-Dell Inspiron 3500 laptop
-Lilliput 7" touch screen
Functions will be:
-engine monitoring and tuning via my megasquirt ECU
-media (connected to my stereo's line in)
Ok, so onto my question..
I've got this laptop beside me right now and I'm trying to figure out a way to power it on by remote. It has an RS-232 serial port on it (it's also on the docking station) and I would like to use it to power it on, except I'm not sure how to do that. I've searched these forums (actually I found this place through a google search on the subject) and I found one person saying he was using an RS-232 cable from an old UPS system to turn his laptop on! The thing is, I can't find any info on how exactly, and when I looked for UPS serial cables, they all look just like any other serial cable out there.. So how is it done? I'm hoping someone here can help me out.
