OK, take two (Frickin pop up blocker...)

OK, although this is my first post, I have been around awhile and have looked at a number of projects and posts and questions, and I have to say, I am impressed.

First of all, I would like to send out a big THANK YOU to those of you that have made these posts in the Newbie thread here to help educate us and bring us under your wings. You have done an awesome job and this has certainly helped me think this forum is something I want to be in. THANK YOU!

I found this site by accident from a link on a Lexus forum I belong too where the guy had posted his latest install and demo and I was instantly hooked. I'm sure I'm not alone here when I say my love for cars and my addiction to PCs has made me want, no need, to do this. But I do have a question that I hope I don't get too beat up for asking: Why? Why go through this amount of work to get to something that, as far as I can tell, gets you little more than with the current higher end head units can do these days?I have seen posts that say you get more capability at a cheaper price, but please educate me. What's the additional capability?

I've seen where people use cap PCs to manage their near terabyte size audio and video library. I've seen very cool navigation systems, and way cool picture management, but what else can they do? Maybe aside from the picture viewer, everything else can be done with a simple pioneer with a 7" screen.

I have an old HP Laptop with a Pentium M laying around collecting dust that I could dedicate to the car so I wouldn't need the docking station, but I have that also. The power switch is just above the keyboard, so getting to the wires should be easy. My thought is that I do not want to loose the stock display data from the existing climate control screen, so I would think replacing the existing head unit with one with a slideout touch-screen would be the ticket. Your thoughts?

Help me out, PLEASE!!!

Thanks, Ken
