I have a couple different programs for OBD II a laptop and a cable that have a OBD II connector on one end and a serial connector on the other end. I connected it directly to the vehicle to the computer but I am not getting anything on the laptop. Is there something else I need on the cable or would it just be the com settings.
Any help would be greatly appericated.

I did some more reading up on it and I now have an interface ordered. thanks for the reply.

+1 The point of the PC software should be to interpret the OBII info. If the port is not enabled then you'll get nothing.how will the diagnostic tool you're buying interface with the computer?Originally Posted by Rick99TAWS6
Yup, definitely need an interface/scantool. Serial data does not come out of the OBD port. There are all kinds of different "standards" that would have to be interfaced with, then outputted via serial.
Well, technically it is serial, just not RS232 and certainly not using the same pinout.
The confusing thing for some people is that the cable used to connect the OBDII port to many scantools uses a DB9 connector but it is not meant to connect to a computer's serial port.
True, but trying not to confuse the newbeans.
If you want to get extremely technical, firewire, USB, ethernet, SATA, PCI Express, etc are all serial. But most people don't think of them in this way.
Just tryin to keep it in the simple realm so nobody gets lost.
