My Future Carputer Need brief opinions

    Hello Everyone,

My first post, so First and foremost, I want to say this is a great place with some very good information.

Although I haven't read EVERYTHING that a newbie should read, I wanted to capture some brief opinions before I transform my brain into a mp3car sponge.

Looking to build a carputer with the following abilities:

    1. Mp3 playback (from all the media storage devices listed below) Not planning to have a separate HU (is this okay?)

    2. Video playback (from all the media storage devices listed below)

    3. GPS navigation (i will research the best software and hardware for this, but if you don't mind, please recommend)

    4. Internet Capability (Currently have a 3g enabled phone with service plan, however i would like the option for wifi)

    5. Back-up camera w/ night vision (multiple cameras preferred)

    6. Bluetooth Capability to integrate my smart phone

    7. OBD II connection (this is optional but i wanted to know how difficult this is to do, and if it will be worth the work)

    8. Separate Mp3 CD changer possible?

    9. I-Pod hook up

    10. Mini USB kerboard/mouse (wireless?)

Assumed: The Screen will be a touch screen.

What OS would best accommodate my needs?

    Media Storage Devices Wanted:
    - Harddrive
    - Compact Flash/SD
    - USB Flash Drive
    - CD-R
    - DVD-R

If this is something i can easily look up then i will be doing that within the next 24 hours so in that case just let me know. If possible please do share your setup with me so i can get an idea of what you guys are working with. If I am missing something beneficial that i can add to this system, please do let me know.

    Thanks in Advance,
    Kundan

    Yes. Plan carefully.

    3. GPS navigation (i will research the best software and hardware for this, but if you don't mind, please recommend)
Software is a matter of preference. iGuidance is good for North America.
GlobalSat BU-353 is an excellent GPS receiver.

    7. OBD II connection (this is optional but i wanted to know how difficult this is to do, and if it will be worth the work)
You just need OBD-II connector/cable and software.

    8. Separate Mp3 CD changer possible?
If you have a HDD full of MP3s, why would you want a CD changer, even if it reads mp3s?
If you're ditching the headunit, integration of a CD changer into a PC-only system would be difficult at best.

What OS would best accommodate my needs?
    You can use any OS.
However, WinXP offers the most compatibility and software offerings for what you wnt to accomplish.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Under normal circumstances, a signature would go here.

    Welcome!

    1. You dont need a HU but make sure you have some sort of amplifying system that goes from your audio output to your speakers.

    2. Good

    3. I agree with DP, iGuidance is excellent.

    4. I have my k1m tethered to my carputer and it works great. Wifi is easy to do, either USB or pci.

    5. Back-up cams, you have two options. Either get a webcam and you can use a front end to configure it or get a back-up cam that has a video output that can plug directly into your monitor. People have even gotten it to work so that when you put your car in reverse (hook up a relay or switch in parallel with the reverse light switch) it automatically switches to that cam.

    6. I have a little tiny usb bluetooth "nub". Works great with my bluetooth GPS receiver and my phone.

    7. Make sure your car has OBDII. I have a 93 mazda mx3 and it doesn't so im stuck with fusion brain

    8. Not really necessary as DP said, especially if you dont have a HU.

    9. Front Ends have ipod connection possibilities.

    10. I have a little wireless keyboard with a thumb pad for a mouse.

Again like DP said, XP is IMHO the best OS for a carputer. You can use programs like nLite to get the size of windows down quite a bit.

24 hours is enough time if you know EXACTLY what your doing. It took me a while to configure everything and get things right. I still don't have everything perfect yet. Whats gonna take forever is if you do any fabrication with your touchscreen monitor or computer.

You need to research what Front End you want (if you do) because these incorporate everything you really want into one easy program.

The only thing with the reverse light switch-a-ma-bobber is that it might be a hardware change to the circuit board of the monitor. I'm almost positive someone did it on this board somewhere. As for the touchscreen, do you mean how will the touch screen interface with the computer? They're usually all USB although some older ones might be serial.

Is there anyway to incoporate the back-up camera technology used in the new infinit g37/g35 to the carputer's back up camera. Specifically that car has an H shape which correspondes with the turn of the wheels to change the angle of the lines (in an H shape i believe). I thought it was a very neat feature because my roomate has one(g37) and actually knows how to use the lines to help him decide when to stop reversing and how much to turn and how much cleareance he has while parking and backing up. Anyone here with something similar?

The Newbie sticky needs to be updated, as technology is quickly improving. I wasnt aware of more the powerful psu available today. Why arent people opting for higher wattage psu when they are easily available now? 250watts dc-dc, i believe is the m4. please correct me if i am wrong. So back to my questions, what are the disadvantage of using these other than the cost?

just the cost. Why spend more then you have to... You are already going to spend more than you think.

But there are advantages over say a DS-ATX with a brainstem versus a regular M2-ATX.

That requires video processing, which means you will now need to feed the video from the camera into the computer using a video input card. Then draw on the H lines to every frame while reading in the rotation of the steeringwheel, and then output to the monitor. Possible yes, but really a lot of work and CPU power to do something so little.

If you are good with electronics and programming then you can make your own little video processor which wouldnt be too hard at that res, and refresh rate and overlay the lines there, but this is not for the beginner.

Yeah, i read about the back up camera technology and i think its an overkill if i even consider trying to do it. I read everyone saying that you are going to spend more than you think, Why would this occur if you plan carefully? what are some of the things people dont take into consideration other than surprises that occur depending on the application(different cars)?
