Question Help me choose a TMR screen - Linitx vs CarTFT

Not sure if I should post this here or in the LCD forum, but as its my first post I'll start here.

I'm after a touchscreen for my first car PC setup and I've decided on a TMR screen after weighing up cost and how well a screen will perform in sunlight. From here I've narrowed it down to CarTFT's CTF700-H and the Linitx LIN70HTPC-H.

Anyway, including shipping to Australia the price difference between the two is only US$3.82 (I filled out the cart on each website ). As a result I can't really split them on price, and to be honest, feature-wise there doesn't seem much between them, so I'd really like some opinions from you guys on which one I should go far. I have a feeling that either one will be just fine, but I'd just like hear what other's think.

And the install will be for a BMW E46 (other E46 owners please chime in!)

Hey, I'm starting on my first carpc install project as well. I've gotten most of the parts together and I decided on the one from CarTFT...the TMR one not the transreflective. With shipping the total came up to around $560 CDN. So far I'm happy with the screen but I have not installed everything as yet.

I have an E46 as well so it'll be going in the same car....hopefully within the next couple of weeks when more parts arrive.

Thanks man... the CarTFT TMR screen looks like a great choice. What's your plan for the bezel? Anyway, keep me posted on how things turn out if you can!

For me, the screen is the most expensive part of the project, so I've been holding off on buying one until I was sure the project was doable. I just finished installing an external switch to my laptop and removed the dead LCD so I think I'm almost ready to go.

Following with interest - also in bright and sunny Australia, and trying to make the same decision. I figure given how sunny it is most of the year, investing in a good screen is critical - simply can't afford to make a mistake and have to upgrade.

For the pricing on cartft.com did you just deduct 19% VAT? Shipping is only EUR34 at cartft.com as compared to EUR56 at linitx. In the end, I worked them out both as EUR344 with shipping to Aust.

Curious - what about the CTF400-S on carTFT site which is EUR20 more, but transflective rather than TMR? I don't know the intricasies of transflective versus TMR, but I am thinking it is not worth a 200NIT cut in brightness.

In another thread there are a few people who have had problems with the linitx flickering and flexing under touch, so leaning towards cartft at this point myself.

Yes, way too much sun down here

I deducted the 19% VAT. The carTFT screen was more expensive, but had a cheaper shipping cost, and vice versa on the linitx. The end result was an almost identical total price.

The CTF400-S sounds interesting. I just wish there were a few more reviews out there. I'd love to see some comparison shots also. My guess is that even with a drop in brightness, the transflective would be superior in sunlight, but maybe not quite as good out of it. My feeling is therefore that the TMR might be the slightly better all round option.

Good luck with the decision.. let us know how you get on!

He he, so who's gonna actually make a decision and take a leap of faith on one of these?

TMR seems to be a half way solution - not quite as good as trans in sunlight, but offering better colour saturation. I probably won't make a decision for a few days yet. It's too expensive an item for me to gamble on.

I was hoping you'd buy one of each and then I'd drive up to Cairns and compare them :-) Tough decision isn't it.. the exchange rate also dropped again overnight.

Well, I bit the bullet and ordered the CTF700-H from CarTFT. Couldn't hold out any longer. I'll follow up with my thoughts on it when it eventually shows up.

On ya! To be honest I am still struggling to justify the amount of money for a 'toy'. I did spend half of Sunday finding things around the house to sell on Ebay though! Depending on what sells, I may order in the next week or so. I am sure that any of the choices would be a good choice in that price bracket. I am leaning towards CarTFT as I have read a few from linITX that have had to be returned. Look forward to hearing your impressions.

If I was able to buy one of each just for comparison, I would also be able to afford to fly you up to Cairns to have a look at them! LOL

Well it arrived. I'm very pleased with the service. Ordered last thursday lunchtime and it arrived at my office on Tuesday morning.

As for the screen, yeah I'm quite impressed so far. I haven't had a lot of time to play with it yet as the car has been in and out of the shop for other reasons. I also don't have a spare power supply or battery to do any bench testing. It does come with an AC adapter, but with a 2 pin plug... so it just requires an adapter to use here in Aus.

I did try it in my car both last night and this morning. In the morning it was clearly visible.. the conditions were overcast and it was only about 7am, but the screen looked really good. I'll see how it goes on a nice sunny day.. from what I've seen so far, I'm optimistic it will do the job!

It certainly feels well made, and of good quality. The touchscreen feels quite responsive. The only fault I've found so far is that translation for the manual is not that great... the screen itself is pretty straight forward so its not a major issue, more of an annoyance.

I'll try and take some pics when I get the time.
