Hi folks im brand new to the whole car pc thing so thought id go for the beginners plus package.
Now, installing into car and power supply etc is no problem to me at all, however, its the initial setup that I cant get my head around.
Think it would just be easier with a short list of my dilemmas:
1. Operating system: I have no idea how to install an operating system when I get one as the system does not come with a cd rom drive.
2.I was going to buy an external dvd writer to mount up front but how can I install this without windows being installed first?
The pc came with an instruction manual of some kind but i honestly dont have a clue about anything in it! I just dont have the vocabulary.
Im hoping this post wont annoy the more experienced out there but i dont want to just power it up and start fiddling with stuff im not confident with.
I basically need to be spoonfed from the point when ive got my pc powered up and my OS and dvd drive in their boxes ready to go in.
One more thing, as far as I can see windows xp seems to be the way to go. What is the fastest way (and cheapest) to get it as all the stores just dont seem to sell it anymore. Just vista. Is there somewhere I can download it from and put it on a disk??
Anyway, I know ive not asked for muchbut any advice from anyone, on any subject would be so much appreciated as ive hit a brick wall with this project and I would like to get it up and running this weekend, thanks in advance!!!

Most new PC's will boot from a USB CD/DVD device. You may have to set this in the BIOS. Instructions are in the link. You can find Windows XP on Amazon. Type "Windows XP OS" in the search bar.

Is windows xp available to download from anywhere as opposed to waiting for the disc to be posted to me?
I have a laptop with vista (what im using now) but I also have a pc upstairs with xp on it (totally legal with key) but i dont have the disc any more. In fact im not even sure it came with a disc or if it was built in.
Is there any way I can just make a boot disc from my pc upstairs and use the same key code? Or will I just have to fork out for a brand new xp OS?
You have to fork it over for another copy of Windows.

yes, but it's not legal to do so. pretty much any XP copy you can download is an illegitimate copy (unless it's a special/trial version on M$'s website) , so you don't really know what you're downloading. it could be packed with viruses, malware, spyware, etc etc. so you can do what you want, but I would not recommend it.
no, AFAIK you cannot make a windows XP installation disk from an existing XP installation.
the OEM license that comes with a computer (where XP is pre-installed by the manufacturer) is not a full retail license. so even if you still had the disc, if it came with the computer then it is not legal to use on any other machine.
many OEM XP installation discs are BIOS locked so that they will only install on the computer it came with, some do not have this safeguard and may alllow you to install it but you won't be able to activate it. retail XP copies allow to to move your license to another machine, but you can't have them activated at the same time.
okay ive got my pc in and powered up. I went in to a local computer repair shop and he gave me an xp home setup disc for £10 and said that my code for my original will work for it.
Anyway, when switching my machine on it appears to start with the black screen with all the info on it and at the bottom it reads 'press f1 to continue del for setup' when I press f1 it reads disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter.
even when I put my xp disc in and press enter it still reads the same thing so i have hit a brick wall.
When I search about this error it seems to be the general oppinion that the disc may not be a bootable disc. There were other suggestions about dodgy hardware etc but as this is a pre built tested package I think its more likely that the disc is at fault.
Is there any sort of OS I can download just to get it up and running. Im not bothered at all as I can always install xp at a later date. I just want to get it going.
One more thing, the fact that my pc doesnt have a cdrom meant I had to buy an external drive. I just plugged it into the usb before switching system on. Could it be thet the pc doest recognize the drive as its brand new and not been installed?? How else can I get the OS installed if this is the case?

Okay I no longer think the disc is at fault as I put it in my laptops drive, restarted the laptop and the option to boot from the cd came up.
I reckon it must be the external dvd drive im using for the car pc. Are there some that just arent compatible for booting from? As it works fine when attached to my laptop or home pc once windows has loaded up.
I just dont want to go buy another one to get the same problem, cheers guys
first, make sure your motherboard is capable of booting from USB. if it is, then go into your BIOS and make sure the "boot from USB" option (or other similar option) is enabled.
