Thumbs up HELP- Adding laptop parts to carputer

hey guys, not really a newbie to carputers, just havnt posted on this site much, ive built my first carputer and it been installed and running great in my car for the last few months. But we recently got a new laptop making my old one useless and it was just sitting in my room.

So last night i pulled it apart to either turn it onto a another carputer for a friend or something. Whilst pulling it apart i thought why not just use the screen in my car somewhere, (its a 15" Screen). Before use say use the search button, i have and Ive read and searched through the forums and so far i know to be able to use the screen in my car i need to Get a controller board that suits the screen???. How do i know if the controller board will work and where can i get these from? (in in QLD Australia, but will most likly buy online)

Secondly, if i do decide to just use the whole laptop as a carputer how can i extend the ribbon that runs from the motherboard to the screen, it is not possilbe to solder wires to the ribbon as there is about 50-80 contacts that sit side by side. The ribbon has a female plug type thing on it that connects to the male plug on the motherboard, can i buy longer ribbon to extend this?
ill get some pics now to show use what i mean. Also im curretntly using a M2-ATX power supply for my carputer, i havnt checked but from memory there is no cable to connect to the 4-PIN Plug on the laptop mother board. Will also get pics of this to show what i mean.

Sorry for the long post, dont mean to boar use to death, but any help and advise would be great.
    Thanks in advance
    -Steven

Yes to use the screen you need to get a controller for it.

You cant really extend the ribbon that far the signals will degrade too much. You can buy a new ribbon of a different length. Make sure it is the right contact number and the right spacing, and it will fit.

And you cannot use a M2-ATX without serious modification to power a laptop. I would say not doable for less than just buying a for-laptop power adapter.

Thanks for the fast reply, how much do these controllers go for? and how hard are they to hook up? (any weblinks for them?) Also with using one of the controllers can i use 2 screens at once? like currently i have a 7"touch screen in my dash run using VGA. Can i use the 7" screen and have the laptop screen on at the same time? Sorry for all the question but i know more about car audio but my computer knowledge isnt so great.

Each panel requires a specific controller. They are not all created equal. If you buy screen A you need controller A and it is very hard to find which to go where.

Panels are cheap. You can get a 15" for $20 to $30 new. The controller however is closer to $150 to $300.

And the controller is just between video signal and screen. 1 video into controller, 1 video out. It basically is just a translator from universal signals like VGA/DVI to a proprietary signal the panel understands. Usually includes the on screen menu too, brightness controls and all that. That is controller, not PC. That is why you can adjust that with nothing else attached on standalone monitors.

If you want more than 1 screen, then you need 1 controller per screen and you can use 2 video outputs from your video card to control them seperately.

oh ok. So the cheaper option is just using the screen off the laptop? The laptop has better "Specs" then my current carputer anyway, 1GHz opposed to 1.8GHz bigger HDD etc. Also not much differnt in physical size. That only leaves the issue of getting longer ribbons and a new power supply am i right?
I need a new project anywayz

That connector is called a JAE50 and this thread talks about getting an extension. I have two (12 and 24 inch) and they were a Godsend for my build.

Only from Paul! Not enough publicity or interest for the store to pick them up YET.
