Car PC in Hyundai sante Fe

Hello gang, thanks in advance for the welcome to this site. I would like to say that there is a wealth of info here.

Im new to car pc's but im an old hat with regular pc's..lol Any how i have a few questions i want to ask and I hope i can find the help i need here. Firstly, i am installed this into my 2006 hyundai sante fe and it has a double din radio bezzle which came with a factory monsoon system which is long gone. My first question is how can install the touchscreen inside there and make it so i can cover the screen when not in use without modding the bezzle. My second question how I protect against wear and tear on hard drives and cd drives with everyday bumbs in the road. and my third and final question is how can i protect my carputer from electrical surges that occur all day in automobiles when starting it, ****ting the engine off etc etc.

Im starting my project with mini-box voom-pc2 and i selected the intel board with the embedded atom processor for its low power cunsumtion. I have downloded the manual via their website but it doesn't go into detail about wiring into the car so i guess now i have a forth question..lol How do i wire it into the car. i have a memphis audio system in my car and im going to remove the head unite completely and with doing that i won't have a remote turn on and im guessing the car pc will do that.

    Thanks for any help here.

You could always buy a motorized screen that flips out. I find these to be tacky when it comes to SUVs though. You will have to alter the bezel if you want to have the screen sit out. Just buy a second bezel to experiment with. As to hiding it, one idea people use is making a fake face plate that connects to the front of the screen to make it look like a stock $h!ty radio.

This has been a subject that no one has really figured it, everyone has their own opinion on the matter. If you are worried about shock the buy a Solid State Drive (SSD), no moving parts. I use a 2.5 HDD but mounted verticle. CD ROM I dont think it make much difference. I have mine mounted verticle also, onlt because its connected to the HDD. The DC-DC power supply, like the m2-ATX has built in surge regulation and surge protection.

You may want to search the forums for this, its not too hard. Basically you would install a AMP kit from the battery to the carpc. Then wire the carpc powersupply to that line and the ground of the powersupply to a ground. The powersupply also has an ACC line which would go to the ignition wire that would connect to the heaadunit that use to go there.

Basically, you made a typo of shutting. The U and the I keys are right next to one another. You figure out why it's so funny.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

LMFAO, thats too funny. UM, no, it doesnt turn the engine off, you still have to do that. When you do turn the engine off the PC will start to shut down then eventually shut off when the PC has closed everything out.

op- darque is right i was just pointing out how you said a swear word

as for your questions- much of it has been said already.

get a dc-dc intelligent power supply... the m2 works for me but the m4 gets a lot of bad rap. the dsatx brand is supposed to be great, although pricey and probably way bigger then you need. these type of power supply keep 12v at the computer wether the car's battery voltage is at 5v or 18v, it doesnt matter. they eliminate voltage spikes before they reach the pc too.

dont worry too much about protecting harddrives. any newer harddrive will have great shock resistance. if you want, mount them on rubber mounts... but overall just keep the harddrive stable and dont let it slide around.

optical drives might take more care to get them skip-free on bumps, but you can figure something out... foam, rubber mounts... again whatever it takes. but for the most part, whatever youre doing with a disc it will be heavily buffered in memory anyway... i doubt youll notice any problems.

i plan on making my touchscreen slide out like a motorized version, only ill do it manually. ill mount it on some track and hinges and just pull out the screen when i need it. that way, when pushed in and closed, it wont look like i have anything more then a regular radio.
