is it possible to do this with a laptop?

This might sound crazy, but I was wondering if it was possible for me to disconnect my laptop screen from my laptop, and then mount it in my car, probably about 3 or 4 feet away from the laptop.

Is there a long cable I can buy, that will connect (or possibly splice) the screen to the base?

Laptop screens are usually LVDS. I know of one case on this forum several years ago where someone extended an LVDS cable. However, it is a more advanced hack. I think the length of the run is one factor and it also it uses a ribbon cable, so it can be difficult to extend.

Search on terms LVDS and you may find the thread. Barring that, take a look in the FAQ Emporium for threads on different types of displays. It may be referenced there.

If I were you I would just buy a screen and use the VGA port on the laptop. If you were looking for a dual screen setup, then buy a screen to connect to VGA, then buy a USB screen
