display for a convertible - long first post lost

long first post lost to the gods of not-logging-in-when-you-first-post-to-a-new-site. Long story short, long time lurker, first time poster, installing a Mac Mini based unit in a vintage Mustang. Space looks a lot like this - the display would be set up where the center controls meet the carpet:

The Mac Mini would go where the A/C vents are - since it's a convertible, there's no AC. I've narrowed it down to a few sunlight-readable displays - I want to use LED backlit because of low power consumption, less heat, and it's a more "green" display technology:

    1. Mp3car's own 629GL with LED and transflective upgrade - this seems the best and most expensive.

    2. motorcity's 629GL with lower quality transflective upgrade - cheaper and some communication issues with this reseller?

    3. mo-co-so.com's 629GL with lower quality transflective upgrade - is this truly not as good as the MP3car.com version?

    4. The only other serious contender at this point - dvrsecuritylab's EBY701 - but how does this stack up against the mp3car.com model?

I never dreamed when I started the project - I upgraded my old Mac Mini connected to the TV and am putting the old one in the car - that I'd be spending $550+ on the display, but since it's in a convertible I may end up needing the "best and brightest". I was originally going to go, in my naivete, with the Mimo 740 USB-powered touchscreen, but that product is not shipping for an indefinite period and I was pretty uneducated at the time. I still may use a Mimo product as a virtual tach under the dash in a different location, though. The monitor would leave the car with me when parked, and the Mac Mini would be hidden under an upholstery panel when not in use and probably taken out of the car if garaged for a long time.

Any insight into what display would be the most appropriate would be very helpful!

I don't have much insight into this, other than stay away from MotorCity. He points the blame at everyone but him if there are any problems.

I know that in the past MotorCity has been a big help, he seems to answer questions quickly, but in the defense of everyone else, i have never bought any items, so I don't know how it is, but to many people complain.

Mo-Co-So is awesome, they have competitive pricing and excellent customer service. They even come on here to answer questions.

MP3Car seems to be pricey on their screens, but most other things are nicely priced. I haven't read any complaints on their screens, so they must be ok.

    Hey all,
Thanks for the insight. I'll have to read up more on the mo-co-so 629GL transflective vs. the mp3car version, while I look into the EBY701 from dvrsecurity at the same time. I do have a temporary solution to make some progress, though. After my Mimo 740 order was cancelled, I got a 10% discount on the Mimo 710. The 710 is a plain LED backlit screen powered and with the display signal coming over USB. No transflective upgrade.

At $120 including free shipping this will give me something to start out with. I know I won't have any signal until after the computer starts up and the driver loads, but it will be fun to try in different positions and get some ideas about brightness. Control at first will be done by just the Front Row remote, and down the road an apple bluetooth keyboard and perhaps a mini mouse or trackpad.

If nothing else, that little $120 7" display will be fun to travel with as a laptop accessory, or attach to an external monitor at home to display widgets, iTunes, whatever. My long term goal if I get one of the nicer transflective displays will be to have that little Mimo running, say, tach and speedo since my car doesn't have a tach and the speedo is inaccurate at this point. All of this would be easily removable to go back to vintage.

I'll make sure to post on here how good or bad the Mimo looks in different positions once I get it all installed. It should eliminate any issues about wiring the monitor into my Carnetix 2140 since it all runs off USB.

MP3Car sent me 2 of the MiMo screens to test out for a project, and it has issues. Only works at 800x600, any lower and its cr@p, any higher and it simply wont work, it will knock it back down to 800x600. Also screen does not work during POST and you can not access the BIOS because the drivers that the MiMo uses are Windows and or Mac dependant, so to use the screen you would have to wait for Windows to satart up. If anything where to happen while it is attempting to boot to Windows, you wouldnt be able to fix the issue.

Thanks Hijack, I pretty much figured on the no screen until after boot thing, but didn't know about the lack of flexibility on resolutions. I plan to test it out inside thoroughly before installing in the car, and it will be interesting to see how Parallels deals with a USB screen - I would imagine it just leaves all the windowing to Mac OS X so there could be a little lag on screen refresh? So if I use, say, tach or speedo software on Windows under Parallels for this screen, it won't be as quick to update?

Screen arrives next Monday or so. When I actually do the install, I'll have a pro, veteran car stereo place I've used before do the wiring for the Carnetix.

That is correct.... when watching a movie, there was occasional lag, especially if the video is really really busy. I had the screen once and awhile freeze up.
