How to find an expert to install a carputer

As a nerd, I love tech stuff - but my specialization is in design... and not handyman work. So my question is, how can I find an expert to install my carputer ?

I can handle building a computer and designing precisely how, complete with a detailed layout visualization, I want the carputer setup - but there's no way I would enjoy opening up my dash and performing the wiring or fabrication.

So ideally, I can find an expert has expertise in computers, auto work, and fabrication.

Where is the best place to find this type of expert ?

    Any tips are appreciated!

If you can solder or strip and crimp wires, you can make a carputer. Thats the majority of the work, other than removing panels and stuff like that, but that is fairly easy too. Most of the wiring in the dash is all connected to a wiring harness that you can buy at wal-mart. It has all of the wires labelled on it and most of them have the end partially stripped for you.

As far as finding some one else to do it, I would say a car stereo shop should be able to do it for you. They don't need to know anything about what the computer wires are for, just run them where you tell them to. And they would be able to install all of the speaker/amp equipment also.

there are so many variables, so many different ways of doing a carpc that to find an expert in all facets of what's involved is extremely tough, there are no carpc install centers...

I agree, a car audio install place is a good place to start & they can usually handle the bulk of the actual installation, although expecting them to be very fluent in all things carpc is a stretch & not all good car stereo places are also going to have a great fabricator if it comes to custom dash mods, although the highest end places should..

if your trying to install a carpc in an 03 corolla, it's very different from say installing a carpc in an 07 S550, so depending on what you have & what your looking for will be the best way to determine what sort of "professional" you need & what level of professionalism you require..

Gonna have to agree. I've been to a couple of car audio places and worked at one that had fabricators that had no idea what they were doing and installers that knew even less. Installing the carputer, outside of fab work, is really easy they should have DIY online. All u need is patience and time..... and some cash

Good stuff. Certainly a car audio shop can probably handle it, that's a good start.

At the same time however, my mechanic friend and I should be able to do it. Ramb0_Command0 has inspired me to try it anyway.

    Thanks.

Yea no problem, just one piece of advice though. Have patience, if you aren't sure how to do something or how something comes apart, find out how it works, or just be really careful. I broke a few clips on panels from my old car because I was in a rush to get stuff done. Nothing like having interior trim come off every time you bump it It really pays to just take your time and do it right. Have fun

I purchased the factory manual and it detailed how to remove the trim pieces. It was worth not breaking some stuff on the trim. Plus, I got the full mechanicals on the car. It was worth it to me.

You can probably find or ask about this online in many cases, but I found the book to be very helpful.

Where do you live? I have actually thought of starting or joining a shop doing
carpc installs. I am finishing my 3rd car right now which I am integrating
a Samsung UMPC into the stock Nav system of a BMW X5.

I will be putting my portfolio together online soon
    and have many pictures.

I live in the Bay Area of San Francisco.
