I have no clue about software at all... microsoft?

I am new the the carputer scene but I am good with computers in general. I've always been a microsoft person.

My question is what microsoft software is available for a carputer? Do I need to run XP and then some kind of interface or is there a microsoft software like CE or something made for the carputer?

The simplest answer is...yes...just a regular WinXP install should be fine.
Then you choose a front end software package to control the PC in the car.
There are several ways to go for a front end, from free( RideRunner (also called RaodRunner) is a popular free package) to commercial (Centrafuse is a popular pay for package, they also have a trail version).

You set the PC up. Install the front end like any other application, and you're good to go.

There are links to every aspect of what you need to get started here.
Try General Hardware for the basic PC stuff and Software for the front ends.

    Yup,

    What Jistari said.

Also, as you mentioned you're a Microsoft person, I'd recommend WinXP as we all know, it is by far the most trusted OS (from Microsoft at least, I'm sure a whole debate can be started about it being THE most trusted OS... )

Another reason for you to stick with Windows as your OS would be your familiarity with it and not having to break ur head over issues that may, and inevitably will crop up over time with your install.

    Cheers!
