Also, if you remove the existing gauges first, as opposed to just putting an LCD screen in front of them, then wouldn't that be illegal, since you'd then be removing or tampering with the odometer?

It probably would if the vehicle wasn't almost 20 years old. But the odometer reading is irrelevant due to age, at least in Texas.

There we go...hearing that-it sounds like the reason.

Since the late 70s or so (whenever they added the hundreds digit)...the odometer reading cannot be altered, obscured or replaced. I remember hearing a case where one of the big manufacturers took the first bunch of cars off the assembly line and had them do test laps with the odometers disconnected. When the news broke they ended up paying the owner of each of the cars a nice sum of money. I haven't read up on any of the legal stuff in a while but i'm pretty sure that was a national law (NHTSA maybe?).

OBDII is not backwards compatible with OBDI. They are two completely different standards, each manufacturer used different pins, communication protocols and sometimes even different connectors.

If the odometer reading cannot be replaced there are MANY vehicles out there built since then that are illegal. The key is requiring the mileage to not be altered. It is 100 % legal to utilize a hub meter for an odometer if your original odometer quit functioning.Further more the alteration of mileage only comes into play when selling the vehicle it is at this point where a crime would be committed and that crime would potentially be fraud. Not having a video screen in view of the driver makes MANY new cars illegal (one case BMW 1 series) the nav/entertainment/ screen is in full view of the driver and designed for driver operation.

The legal aspects of this is not what he was wondering about...how to do it was.

I have looked a fusion brain. I am thinking that FB will probably be the solution, however, I am not sure what program will be able to interpret the obdI signal.

I guess we need to know specifically what he wants to view.
    Speedo?
    Tach?
    Temp?
Being a diesel is there a glow plug light?
    PRNDL indication?
    signal indicators
    etc...
Most of those things can be monitored and displayed without touching the ODB1
they would simply use relays or sensors attached to the analog inputs of the FB

It seems that many people in this hobby are hell bent on reinventing the wheel. Why over complicate things?

not to jack the thread I have a 92vr4 that I want to do a similar thing to.. due to the fact that the car can become a ticking time bomb once things like larger turbo's and injectors are in the car... I have a obdI cable and palm m515 with software called mmcd that does basic datalogging functions and im sure some of you might be familiar with mmcd as it is used in a variety of vehicles.... Im either contemplating removing the stock gauges with the exception of the odometer and installing a screen in its place or just an additonal pc to monitor these things..

I would like to do all of these things. My guages are all electronic, they are pinned into a circuit board. Would FB be the way to go and what front end would be the best for this?

currently there is no universal obd1 program available... and the program would most likely have to be written..... there is a program that is availabe all day long for obdII people but since your obd1 like me your only option seels like to get the fusion box hook it up to your car and then figure out a way to find a software that interprets the raw data being sent from the fb.....

best source to find a user interst group about your vehicle if there is one.. and learn all you can about how the ecu operates, and what sensors are for what.. for example I can get diagnostic readings on my 92 vr4 all from getting a signal from the obd1 port with the exception of my speedo.. which would have to be a seperate sensor coming from the speedo cluster..
