Thread: Data911 basic system....

266MHz with 128MB of RAM. Wow. That system might be a little, um, underpowered for what you're wanting to do.

To get into the BIOS setup, it may not be the DEL key. It might be one of the function keys, or Ctrl+Alt+Esc.

To install Windows, you'll most likely need to plug in a CD-ROM drive to the motherboard. That system most likely won't boot from USB (neither flash drive nor USB CD-ROM).

Thanks, I just want to see what I can do with this, its just a fun little project for now. I guess I could load that case with a better board and stuff, but not yet.

I can get to the Bios, but the keyboard is not functioning in the BIOS screen, and I need to enter the password to use the BIOS, can't even do that. I know the keyboard is functional cause the DEL key on power up gets me to the BIOS screen, thats where the fun stops.

Hopefully I can figure it out.

If that's a USB keyboard, try a PS/2 keyboard instead.

BIOS may be F1 or F2 also.

That's going to suck, frankly. Not much of anything useful these days will run on Win98.

With something that underpowered, you might be better off doing a linux based install. That should be good for the very basic stuff. I dont think you will be able to put any sort of fancy windows based front end on it.

9-10 yrs!

The keyboard/touchpad is Data911 and came with it. I have not been able ot get it working yet.

I have a friend that know this stuff, works with computers and is checking to see what all can be run with it. He said it would probably not be able to run more than one program at a time.

If it's circa 1999, it should be able to run windows 98 shouldn't it?

Well for $80 total investment, I can't complain at all. I can always buy something better.

That is an interesting challenge. There is probably something you can run. To put it in perspective, this processor speed is slower than almost all smart mobile phones sold today.

Well I met with my computer friend for lunch and he confirmed that this might not be worth the effort.

In my ebay search I ad also bought a second Data911 CPU (M5) for $30, this one with a Mobile Intel Celeron 1.2 Ghz Single Core; Memory: 512 MB; Hard Drive: 40GB 2.5" IDE Toshiba and Windows XP Pro already installed.

He said this one should be much better in the car. He is going to build me a power supply for it and then I will go from there.

A VGA compatible touchscreen and a "front end" is my next decision.
