    considering going carputer vs hu

    hello guys,

i was in the market for a touchscreen hu and stumbled upon a link in my favorites(i was adding a page). i'm not good with cars or electric connections/powering, but im sure i can probably find some help online with these.

i was thinking about a laptop setup, i need a new laptop so this would be cheaper for me. also, i would have all my media up to date and have my newest tunes with me. i currently have a 2007 chevy tahoe stock with 2 subwoofers powered by a kicker 1000.1 amp each. would i need to get another amplifier in order to power the screen and some sort of hook-up for the laptop? it would be nice to be able to keep the laptop charging while hooked up. at the moment, when i have my subs at "full blast", my lights dim a little everytime they hit. would i be pushing it with adding another amp? would adding another amp require me to get an extra battery?

also, which head unit would you recommend to get?(i assume i still need a simple one atleast) i think i also need to get a voltage "converter" or something along the lines of that, whats the ease of setting these up?

bleutooth, i looked this up and it seems to work great with laptops, but how well does this work with a touchscreen?

which touchscreen is the "best" pricewise and quality

what is the average total cost for a project like this and time duration for someone who doesn't know much(how long did it take you your first time?)

    many thanks

not sure how you managed to wire up your sound system if you're not so good at wiring etc.

definitely read the faq, and search the forums.

if you're using an old laptop, you could basically just mount it under the seat or somewhere similar, find a way to make it turn on and output to a monitor with the lid closed, make sure none of the fan openings are blocked. then just mount a touchscreen monitor somewhere on the dash and call it a day...

for power you'll want to check the voltage/amperage that is required by the AC adapter, and get a DC-DC converter that will output the specified power, or you could go down to walmart and buy 100-150w power inverter for $30-$40, plug it into your cigarette lighter, and then plug the laptop's AC adapter into that and call it a day...

for sound, just use a basic head unit with an aux input along with a ground loop isolator because you'll likely have some noise in the line from the cheap inverter...

finally, make sure that the power inverter is switched or that your cigarette adapter turns off when the car is off, or else you will drain your battery...

there is no "best" touchscreen because everyone's needs are different. check out the mp3car store for reviews on most of them, but a 7-8" lilliput will generally be your entry level monitor.

so, if you've already got the laptop, spend about $250 on the monitor, and another $100-$150 on various other accessories, you could be carputering for about $400...

installation should only take a couple of weekends if you go this route. good luck.

wheather you even want to run a head unit is up to you. find the best one that you can find for what you want to pay-- that will be the best head unit.

there is no average cost for a car computer. it depends entirely on your requirements, and parts that you already have, or still need to buy... i have seen threads where they have built the entire thing from parts they have laying around, only needing to spend a couple of bucks on wiring, and then there are installs like Hijacks(search for it )...

also, some installs are done (from the time you get all the parts, to finishing installing it in the car) in a week or two, and other installs are never done, you just stop working on it long enough to enjoy what you have so far, or can afford to do that month...
