I would appreciate input on my first carputer install...

Im in the process of getting together the equipment for my first carputer install. This will be going in a 95 Honda del sol. Here is the equipment I plan on purchasing.. I actually have already bought some of it.

    - I already prewired the car with everything I would need. 6 channels of RCA, Long Power run, Upgraded Battery, 9 wire speaker wire(8 channels 1 remote).

Amplifiers- Two Alpine PDX amps. the mono 1.600 and the four channel 4.150.

WHat I currently need to buy:

The entire carputer portion of the system, I did not want to go out and buy anything until I felt confident that it would work well with my system. I have installed many car audio systems over the years but I have never delt with a carputer system before. So I have a few questions..

    1. Can I run active?...I am currently running active in my other daily driver car. 2 way up front with sub.(5 channels of rca) If so what type of sound card would I need? Also is it really a pain in the ***?.. How about the software...anything different I would need?

    2. Should I use a solid state hard drive? My friend recommended one as he said they were much more durable.

    3. I have looked into which touchscreen I want...and I want to do with a single din flipout. I have seen a few on ebay and such and I really dont know which ones are good, or if they are all the same??

ANy of those good?...Im ready to pull the trigger on some equipment, I will take time to read some other threads around here but I figured I would post while I am reading.

SO I did some reading and it seems the only way to run active is to get the single din Alpine h700 or 701 in addition to the computer and monitor?....eek that runs the cost of the system up a bit.

Unless you have the money, SSDs aren't absolutly necessary. I ran the same 3.5" seagate drive for ~3 years with no issues whatsoever. I only changed it because I upgraded my mobo, and wanted SATA. I'd say save the money and use it toward a good souncard/DAC.

yes you can run active setups(with some setups, up to 100+ db/oct crossovers!)-- in fact, that is the entire reason that i am using a carputer...

there are 2 main programs-- Audio Mulch, and Console.there is also some other things you would need to run, depending on your setup, and requirements-- sometimes you will need, Virtual Audio Cable (sometimes refered to as VAC) and/or ASIO4ALL (A4A). there are some threads in the 'high end car audio' section that have gone in depth on how all the programs work, and how to set them up together, so i won't go into it here.

sound cards are personal preferance, but i typically recommend to stay away from Creative brand cards, because they seem to have the most amount of issues.

while there does not seem to be any real advantage of 2.5" laptop drives, if you are buying new drives(ssd will boot faster, 3.5" drives are just larger), i would recommend them for their small footprint.

the screen in all three of those links seems to be a non-branded thermaltake screen. i have not seen any reviews here on them, but i also have not seen any flip out vga screens that anyone is proud to recommend... most seem to have issues a couple months after installation with certain parts failing(not from hard use, but from poor design).

I have never heard of those 2 cables. I will look into the section to which you are reffering too. With that being said does it depend on what sound card I do get weather or not I can run active? I would assume I would need a 5.1 channel sound card, or a 7.1?... which one?

with the way that the programs work, you are actually taking control of what the card sends to which output, so as long as the card has as many outputs as you need, it will work.
