You may have the functionality but a car pc is a far superior platform to an iPhone with a screen. The interface is not appropriate for car use on the iPhone.
ok, i have a computer laying around, but i would need to buy a dcdc psu and alot of wires.
i already own an iphone. pretty much i wanted the computer for movies, mainly music videos while i drive, becuase my iphone storage is almost non existant, but what else would be a benifit of the car pc? i have GPS on the iphone, music, youtube, internet, what on the computer justifys the cost of using that other than just doing the screen replication for iphone thing?

i dont mind the interface on the iphone. it works fine for me (ie bigger buttons, and stuff like that). If i buy the car iphone integration kit, and later on want to do the carputer, cant i just use the same screen? so i can play with it but not waste any money
The screen needs to be VGA if you want to use it for a pc or else it will be fuzzy.
Using the iPhone interface while driving is dangerous. A dedicated front end on a car pc is much better. The iPhone interface is designed for you to look at it while operating it. That can be avoided with a car pc. You don't have to believe me, but it's true.

plus, everyone has an iphone...car computers are just cool not to mention OBDII if you are car savvy
If you have to ask, the answer is probably NO.
HARDWARE: Fujitsu Stylistic ST5111w/WiFi and dock, internal Hitachi 500G HD, external 1TB HD, Sierra Wireless Aircard 550, DVD-RW, BoomzBox HD radio, XM Commander, Delorme GPS, Saitek X-52 Pro joystick, BluSoleil Bluetooth, TPMS, FB, Elm327
Same situation as you taintedplay.
If you're referring to the mp3car articles where they use the belkin, jailbreak and lilliput. You should still be able to use the screen since IF I'm not mistaken is the touchscreen version.
I have also looked at what Alpine has to offer but the 404 only has a 4" screen. Sort of defeats the purpose and the fun of DIY.
However, I really want the bluetooth integration with my car speakers which is led me here.
I think Bugbyte is correct in many ways but if you want to baby-step your win into the carpc world the iphone/jailbreak/monitor might just be a great start!
I had car pc until I got iPhone.
honestly, Car pcs are cool but now when there is technology
iPhone is a wonderful piece to be used as car pc
Saying this and having iPhone I would never spend time or money
to install car pc anymore.
I have everything on iPhone that I had on car pc
and I have it with me at all times, not only in the car
that just my opinion.
