Can someone help me get the ball rolling?

    Hi all,
I've been doing a bit of reading, but having troubles coming up with much for single-DIN sized enclosures and appropriate hardware...

Basically, I want a carputer that fits in a single DIN space (in place of a glovebox mounted CD changer), with:
Composite video output (already have an in-dash screen)
    Sound (nothing fancy)
USB 2.0 (just 2 ports will do)
Enough grunt to play your average video files, divx, mkv, etc.
    Probably run Windows XP
    and *maybe* an optical drive.

Can anyone start me off with a recommended enclosure and mobo? Maybe a PSU, but I'm sure I can figure that out myself once I know what mobo I'm looking at...

Look into something along the lines of a FitPC or fabricate something using a NanoITX board.
    Performance will be lacking, however.

And you certainly won't be able to fit the PC AND the optical drive in a single-DIN enclusure. There is simply not enough space.

You do realize that most don't put the PC in the dash, but somewhere else, right?
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?

Very true. I went behind the dash on my truck temporarily. If it was me I would gut the cd changer you have in the glove box and put the pc in there.

That's what I was planning to do... Hence it's a DIN sized solution I'm after.
FitPCs look awesome, but no analogue video out...
Anyone know of a netbook that has composite or s-video out? That might be the way to go...

composite out is going to give you a very poor video signal. text will be harder to read because vga is a much higher resolution than composite, so there will be loss just to get the output you want. then there is the interface-- you can use a keyboard, or a space navigator, but most front ends are much easier to use with a touch screen.

and before you ask, it is not easy to make a standard hu touch screen interface with a computer-- part of it involves reverse engineering the touch screen controller...

So you want a DIN sized monitor, not a DIN-sized computer.
I suggest making your intentions clearer.

The fold-out single DIN monitors suffer from crap build quality, as a general rule.

Have fun. You're in for a long frustrating road, methinks.

Nope, you were right first time round, I'm after a single DIN sized *computer* (to mount in my glovebox).

I already have a screen on my dashboard (factory satnav) that has composite video in... I don't know where that got twisted...

I was now wondering if there is an eeePc that suits my needs that I could take the guts and hardwire in the space. I have no problems having to use something like a wireless presentation device to control it, never stated I want/need touch screen control...

So I'm completely confused now, but that's pretty normal.

If you're doing a glovebox install, I wouldn't limit yourself to a DIN-sized enclosure. You'll be hard-pressed to get everything you want in a package that size, especially considering you want an optical drive in that space, as well.

Look at your entire glove box as the enclosure and utilize that space for your install. Doing so will likely give you more space and more options as far as hardware.

I suggest you hook a PC - any PC up to a television using the composite out (most laptops will do) and set the resolution to 800 X 600. The best results will come with an S-video out cable.

Make sure you imagine it to be 7" in size.

If it looks okay to you, load up RideRunner or whatever front end you intend to use and make sure you can read everything easily. You can, of course, code your own skin for the front end and that is most likely the best way to use a composite out screen.
